A propagandist ploy
Homer Simpson exclaimed, “They have the Internet on computers now!” Great news for this paper’s staff that published the editorial “Abortion Care?” wherein the author appears confused about the definitions of “embryo” and “baby.” I suppose “conception,” “zygote” and “blastula” would also be beyond their understanding. Even the simple word “clinic” is denied its common meaning.
There’s no real confusion here; this lumping of terms and use of hyperbole is used deliberately to demonize legal abortion. The author even played the Nazi card. The propagandist ploy of omitting fact is obvious here, failing to mention that the right to abortion is afforded by the highest court, one of the three branches of our government.
The article cast supporters of legal abortion as advocates for “abortion on demand.” And adds “no matter what, no matter when.” This is blatant falsification. No one is advocating for abortion beyond that provided by Supreme Court decision. This is as disingenuous as the explanations given for the four laws being litigated. Claims about concern for women’s safety are specious. The objective is to shame the patient and make abortion so inaccessible that a woman’s right is denied.
Polls suggest that most Americans favor legal abortion, but the editorial ignores all relevant considerations favoring the opposition while managing callous disregard for the young women ill-equipped for the demands of modern life and unprepared for the financial and other responsibilities inherent with parenthood. And for those government spending hawks, excessive restrictions on abortion (and birth control) perpetuate the cycle of poverty, dependence and crime. ROLAND ROBINSON
