ARKADELPHIA — The mystery surrounding the shooting and wounding of N. R. Franklin, a wellknown farmer near Gum Springs, Tuesday night was cleared up here today, according to Sheriff Golden, who says Franklin’s stepson, Sam Fitzhugh, aged 26, confessed to the attempted killing soon after the sheriff arrested him. Three negroes, Clayton, Henry, and Jake Williams, are held as accomplices of Fitzhugh.

The Little Rock Planning Commission recommended Thursday the rezoning of the Riverdale Country Club property at 1725 Rebsamen Park Road to A One-family, C two-family, E1 quiet business, F commercial, E apartment, and I light industrial. Riverdale will move to the new Pleasant Valley Country Club in Pleasant Valley subdivision. There were no objections to the rezoning request. The Commission also approved the rezoning of 8313 West Markham Street from A one-family to F commercial for a post office but stipulated that a bill of assurance be signed allowing only a postoffice or an E1 quiet business use to be constructed on the property.

HOT SPRINGS — Investigators are looking for clues to a fire that destroyed a local nightspot early Monday morning. The fire reportedly began in the rear of the Good Time Charlies, 613 Ouachita Ave., around 4:26 a.m., as the private club’s employees prepared to close the club. Charles W. McCoy, owner of the club, told a reporter at the scene that he had “no idea” how the fire started, but employees were able to get customers who remained in the club out of the building. According to a report from the Hot Springs Fire Department, the origin of the fire is undetermined.

A 27-year-old patient at the State Hospital committed suicide Friday at the stateowned psychiatric hospital, said Julie Munsell a spokesman for the Department of Human Services, which runs the facility. The woman, who Munsell declined to identify citing a federal patient privacy law, hanged herself in the shower in her room. She voluntarily committed herself to the hospital in late July, but Munsell declined to say why she was being treated, citing patient privacy. The patient, who was from Benton County, hanged herself from a shower faucet handle.
