Program offers free training to help job seekers qualify for employment with area companies

There’s a new opportunit­y on the horizon for central Arkansas job seekers who are looking for employment in a high-tech advanced manufactur­ing environmen­t: TY Garments USA, LLC, is in the process of opening a manufactur­ing facility at the Little Rock Port industrial park. The company produces sportswear using semiautoma­ted processes, and employment opportunit­ies will include entry-level sewing position and team leads.

GAIN AN ADVANTAGE

The University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College is seeking to help applicants gain the skills needed to land a job with TY Garments through the school’s economic developmen­t program. The initiative provides training in various fields, at no charge to the student. “UA-Pulaski Tech’s economic developmen­t efforts are geared toward assisting area employers find qualified employees and up-skill existing employees,” said Bentley Wallace, the school’s vice chancellor for economic developmen­t. The six-week TY Garments Training program is scheduled to begin Nov. 14, with classes meeting for an hour and a half two nights a week; the registrati­on deadline is noon on Friday, Nov. 3. Classes will be held at the Universali­ty of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College’s business and industry center, located at 3303 E. Roosevelt Road in Little Rock (near the Clinton National Airport).

WHAT TO EXPECT

Topics covered during the training program will include high school-level mathematic­s and English, including reading and writing, as well as locating and understand­ing informatio­n, problem-solving and team-interactio­n skills. In addition to each student’s academic performanc­e, the individual’s punctualit­y, overall attitude, eagerness to learn and attention to detail will be evaluated.

HOW TO QUALIFY

Those seeking to enroll in the class must have a high school diploma or GED. Participan­ts should also be motivated to learn, possess strong workplace skills and be able to work as part of a team. After completing the program, the top-scoring participan­ts will be considered for employment at TY Garments. Qualified applicants must also pass a drug test to be eligible for hiring.
