100 YEARS AGO March 18, 1918 HELENA — Ernest Williams and Henry Brown, the two negroes arrested Thursday, charged with breaking into an interstate shipment of whiskey at Lexa, are said to have confessed to officers here that they stole a barrel of whiskey from a car on March 8 and sold it to another negro named Ben Harrison for $400. Special Agents Frazier, James and Worthington, accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Frizzell, went to Lexa Thursday night and found the barrel of whiskey buried two feet under the ground.

50 YEARS AGO March 18, 1968 PINE BLUFF — Bloodhounds led police Sunday night to three more of the inmates who escaped last week from Cummins Prison Farm. State Police said Marvin Thomas Russell, 28, and John Killey, 23, were captured by troopers and Pine Bluff Police in a field on the eastern edge of the city. They said Dan Spencer, 43, was captured in a barn in the area about an hour later. Killey was serving a seven-year term for burglary and grand larceny in Miller County, Russell was serving a 19-year sentence for burglary and grand larceny in St. Francis County, and Spencer was serving a five-year sentence for grand larceny in Polk County.

25 YEARS AGO March 18, 1993 FAYETTEVILLE — Jeffery Scott Thomas knew what he was doing when he allegedly strangled a Springdale woman and stabbed a Fayetteville couple to death, officials said after a psychiatric evaluation at the State Hospital. Thomas, 20, of Fayetteville is scheduled to be tried April 26 in Washington County Circuit Court in the December 1991 death of Karen Stout, 30. 10 YEARS AGO March 18, 2008

The manslaughter trial of a Little Rock man accused of causing the death of a woman outside a Main Street restaurant ended in a mistrial Monday after defense attorneys complained they hadn’t received photographs taken during a concert at the eatery and nightclub. Crystal Heard was shot to death during a gunbattle outside Juanita’s Mexican Cafe & Bar on May 17, 2007, after a concert at the nightclub at 1300 S. Main St. Juanita’s security had emptied the bar after an altercation in the audience, but the fight resumed outside, prosecutors said. Shots fired by Kevin Montell Hubbard, 21, started the melee, which led to Heard’s slaying, prosecutors said during opening arguments.
