Young Wildcats look to surprise this season

The Hector Wildcats Baseball team might be overlooked by some coming into this year as a result of their young age, but head coach Jeff Haralson thinks they can make some noise this season. “[We are] looking to gain momentum as the year progresses,” he said. “[They’re] probably the youngest team I have ever had, but newcomers bring good experience from playing on quality summer teams. [We’re] looking to surprise some people.” Coach Haralson said senior Camren Haralson is the team’s best hitter for average, and it shows, as he posted a .385 average in 2017. Coach Haralson also said junior Cody Day and senior Jamie Burch are the Wildcats’ two best power hitters. “[Burch] worked hard on adjustments with his swing for better contact — probably use him in the five hole,” Haralson said. Coach Haralson also credited senior Parker Lee and senior Jadon Graham with being the team’s best fielders. “[Lee] has soft hands and accurate arms, makes routine plays,” Haralson said. “[Graham] has great range and understanding of the game and will be a plus to our infield.” Day and Camren Haralson will pitch the bulk of conference games, Coach Haralson said. “Day has a good run on fastball and is able to locate well,” he said. The coach said he expects big things from Day this season. Coach Haralson said right-hander Camren Haralson has worked hard to fine-tune his accuracy. “Good strength and durability will give him a chance to produce on the mound as a senior,” the coach said. Right-handed pitcher Parker Lee produced a lot of ground balls from the Wildcats. “[Lee] pounds the zone with a little sink to his fastball, which helps him get a ton of ground balls,” Coach Haralson said. Hector’s 2017 season ended with a 6-2 loss to Pangburn in the district tournament.
