SOLOMON “LITTLE SOL” RAYBURN BYARLAY, III, passed away at his home on April 4, 2018. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he retired from Braniff Airlines as a pilot. He was a member of the Braniff Pilots Associatio­n.

Preceded in death by his parents, Solomon Rayburn and Edith Toler Byarlay, and brother, Dr. John William Byarlay, he is survived by a brother, Thomas W. Byarlay and wife, Betty; sister, Barbara Irene Byarlay Barkley, both of Little Rock; and a host of other family and friends.

DAVID RAY GADDIS of Maumelle, Ark., age 95, died at home, on Monday, April 9, 2018, under the care of Hospice Home Care. He was born on September 30, 1922, at Hillman, Ark., before the family moved to a farm outside of Dardanelle in 1927. He married Jeanie Kennedy on June 7, 1942, and they were married for 68 years before her death in 2010.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.

Survivors include three children: Larry Gaddis (Linda) of Little Rock, Blaine Gaddis of Little Rock, Kim Gaddis Wadley (Buddy) of Springfiel­d, Ark.; two grandchild­ren, Dr. Emily Gaddis Kocurek (Jared) of Little Rock, and R. Scott Gaddis of Little Rock; one great-grandson, Judah David Kocurek of Little Rock; one sister-in-law, Carol Kennedy Thacker of Maumelle; and many nieces and nephews.

David retired from the Little Rock District Corps of Engineers as Comptrolle­r in 1978. Highlights of his 37 year career there included financial oversight of Nimrod, Bull Shoals, Norfork, and Table Rock Dams, Little Rock and Blythevill­e Air Force Bases, and the Arkansas River Navigation System. He is a veteran of WWII, during which he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve for a number of years afterwards.

David was a faithful member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church for 58 years, serving as a Deacon, Homebound Ministry leader, and Sunday School teacher until shortly before his death. The family expresses gratitude for the compassion­ate assistance provided by Hospice Home Care.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 12 at 2 p.m. at Cornwell Chapel, Dardanelle, Ark. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery, Dardanelle. DAVE HILLIARD, 94, passed away at his home on April 7, 2018. He was born January 28, 1924 in Middlesex, N.C. He was son of the late Henry and Thelma Hilliard.

He will be remembered for his love of God as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He is survived by Barbara Hilliard, and his children Dana Hilliard, David Hilliard, Donna Villa, and Rachel Tharp. World War II Veteran HAROLD “BUD” ROSS JOHNSTON, 98, passed away peacefully in his home in Roland, Ark., on April 7, 2018. He was born in 1920 in Yell County, Ark., to Harold Banks Johnston and Sybil Clarice (Ross) Johnston. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Sallie (Keeling) Johnston; his son, John H. Johnston; sisters, Mary George, Rena Foster, Jane Klober and Nina Stewart; as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law.

He is survived by his daughter, Judy (Bruce) Thompson; daughter-in-law, Mary Johnston; granddaugh­ters, Nikki (Patrick) McDonald, Kristen (Zach) Meador and Laura (Zac) Murtha; brother-in-law, Eugene “Boog” (Ann) Keeling; as well as many nieces and nephews; and great grandchild­ren, Olivia, Cameron, Natalie, Wyatt, Jayden, Owen, Marley, Hallie and Hannah.

After graduating from Dardanelle High School and prior to his entering the National Guard, he worked as a carpenter. His National Guard Unit was activated in 1940. After basic training, he was sent to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska to serve more than two years in the 153rd Infantry Regiment. He then went to Ft. Benning, Ga., for parachute school with the 502nd Parachute Regiment. Upon joining the 17th Airborne Division, his theaters of service in Europe included France, Holland, Belgium, Austria and Germany.

Upon returning from WWII, Bud was employed by the USA Fire Department stationed at Adams Field in Little Rock, Ark. The Little Rock Fire Department merged with the USA Fire Department, and he served there for 31 years, retiring in 1976 as a Captain, serving many years at Station 12 on Cantrell Road.

Being an avid deer and turkey hunter, Bud was a lifetime member of the Po-Boy No. 2 Hunting Club and kept himself busy with gardening, yard work and grandchild­ren in his retirement years. He was a longtime member of the Baptist Faith and active in the community of Natural Steps. Bud enjoyed excellent health until his early 90’s, but was able to remain at home thanks to his devoted children, grandchild­ren and close friends. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the Bonner Family; Jo Raney; The Pharmacy at Wellington; VA Home Based Primary Care and their staff: Dr. Adolf, Donna, Kent, Megan, Phillis, Debra, Chip, Joy, Megan; Arkansas Hospice and their staff: Dr. DeVan, David, Tina, Shanekia, Karen, Deborah, Carly, Ashley, Luther, Laura; and caregivers, Michelle, Natasha, LaShawna and Carman.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at Brearley Cemetery in Dardanelle, with Military Honors, the Little Rock Fire Department Honor Guard, and the Patriot Guard.

THOMAS LECIL SHANKS, of Little Rock, died on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the age of 94.

He was born on August 5, 1923 in Ft. Worth, Texas. His parents were the late Jesse Lee Shanks and Eunice Maynard Shanks.

Growing up during the Great Depression, he began going to job sites as a child with his father, and by the age of 15 was considered an accomplish­ed carpenter. He was very successful as a home builder in Ft. Worth, Texas. Later he began a career with Metropolit­an Life Insurance until his retirement in 1978.

He married his loving wife, the late Betty Nichols Shanks in December 1989. He is survived by children, Joe Nichols and John Nichols, both of Little Rock, Carolyn Shanks Paget of Houston, Texas, Thomas Randall Shanks of Ontario, Canada, and the late Dr. Richard A. Shanks of Houston, Texas. His many grandchild­ren include Ben Nichols of Memphis, Tenn., Matthew Nichols of Austin, Texas, Jeff Nichols of Austin, Texas, Melissa Mount O’Dell of Houston, Texas, Philip Carl Mount of Houston, Texas, Rachel Mount Gaston of Houston, Texas, Richard Lee Shanks of Houston, Texas, Rachel Shanks Brown of Houston, Texas, Thomas R. Shanks of Lenoir, N.C., and William Bradley Shanks of Lenoir, N.C.; and 15 great-grandchild­ren. He will be missed by all.

He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II for three years and 26 days. After the war, he attended Texas Christian University and Wharton School of Finance in Philadelph­ia, Pa. He earned his CLU during his career at MetLife, was a 32nd degree Mason, was active in the Sons of the American Revolution, and served as Tennessee State President and National Trustee, a Deacon in the Baptist Church, served as President of his Home Owners’ Associatio­n for many years, and loved golfing with his friends.

Funeral services will be held beginning at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home Chapel, 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, Ark. 72211.

BENTON — Joely Anne Clements, age 20, of Benton, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2018. She was born on April 13, 1997, in North Little Rock, Ark.

Joely graduated from Harmony Grove High School, attended the University of Arkansas, and most recently Cosmetolog­y School. She was preceded in death by her mother, Tonya Hill, and grandfathe­r, Andrew M. Clements.

She is survived by her father, Andy Clements of Benton; stepfather, Matt Hill of Maumelle; two grandmothe­rs, Joyce Phillips and Vicki Callahan; numerous other family and friends; and her little dog, Honey.

BISCOE — Karen Annette Williams Smith, 63, of Biscoe, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior on April 8, 2018. She was the daughter of W.L. (Bud) and Faye Williams.

Karen was a farmer’s wife, a homemaker, and a member of the Biscoe First Assembly of God Church. She graduated from DeValls Bluff High School, where she and her husband served as homecoming king and queen.

Karen gave her life to serving others. Her love of Jesus Christ and her study of his word was an example to many. Karen taught Sunday School, served as secretary and treasurer at her church, volunteere­d in the church nursery, as well as helping to celebrate the weddings and baby showers of many friends, family and church members.

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of 44 years, Kent; her children, Brandon and wife, Amy, and Heather and husband, Charlie Brown. Known best as “Nana” to her four grandchild­ren, Jenna, Hayden, Preslee, and Bowen Brown. She deeply loved and adored them all and dedicated her life to them. Karen was a “second mom and nana” to many and leaves a large loving family. Karen was preceded in death by both of her parents; her brother, Larry; and grandparen­ts, Bob and Emma Coulson and Neely and Irene Williams.

CABOT — Dorothy (Dicus) Cartmel, of Cabot, Ark., fondly known to friends and family as “Dottie”, was born October 18, 1942, to Elmer and Lois (Tucker) Dicus.

She went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, April 7, 2018.

This world has been a better place for 75 years with her contagious smile.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dalton Cartmel. Dalton and Dottie have four daughters, Donna (Kevin) Mann of Cabot, Sara Marshall of Ward, Cindy (Greg) Jones of Cabot, and Kelly (Alyssa) Journey of Little Rock. She has five grandchild­ren, Matt Payne, Missy Payne Mathis, Ashlyn Marshall Madding, Megan Marshall, and Josie Jones. She also has three great-grandchild­ren, Mallory Payne and Gage and Macey Mathis. Also surviving her are her two sisters, Helen Vowan and Teresa Carter. She is preceded in death by her parents.

CABOT — Larry Dewayne Hutcherson, age 74, of Cabot, died April 8, 2018, in Northwest Medical Center of Springdale, surrounded in love by family. He fought a long battle with diabetes for many years, spending time at his son’s home in Farmington over the past 10 years, and various nursing and rehab facilities in NWA. Larry’s wish for the family was to love him dearly, but let him go when the time came.

From his birth in Tyler, Texas on November 5, 1943, to his death on April 8, 2018, he had a life and love for his family. He also was a caring and faithful husband, father, and grandfathe­r and great-grandfathe­r. He was fun-loving and his quick wit would make you laugh. He valued his time with family and built lifelong relationsh­ips with friends. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, golfing, coaching his son’s sports teams, and traveling with his family.

Mr. Hutcherson, a native of Texas, grew up attending Tyler High School. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army. Later, he would retire from Knights Grocery of Cabot as a retired Market Manager.

It was in Arkansas where he met his wife, Mary Ann Gibson. Some of his favorite memories with Mary Ann included attending local auctions and traveling to Colorado for family vacations.

Left to honor Larry and remember his love is his son, Matt (Amy) Hutcherson of Farmington, and Jake (Nicole) Hutcherson of Cabot; four grandchild­ren, Courtney, Caleb, Eli and Talan; one great-grandchild, Brody. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Gibson Hutcherson.

CONWAY — James Robert Wagoner, 76, of Conway, Ark., went to be with the Lord Sunday, April 8, 2018. He was born February 15, 1942 in Huntsville, Ala., to Robert Lee and Mary Lou Wagoner.

James was preceded in death by his wife of over 30 years, Ruth E. Wagoner; his daughter, Candie Wagoner Helms; his brothers, Jack, Kenny, and Billy Wagoner; and his parents.

HOT SPRINGS — Dr. Joe Luther, 91, of Hot Springs, passed away April 4, 2018. He was born October 29, 1926 in Mountain View, to Thurlow and Seddie Luther.

Joe is predecease­d by his parents; wife, Ava Nell Luther; brothers, Letus Luther and Bob Luther.

Joe grew up in Mountain View and attended the University of Arkansas and Baylor Dental School. He practiced dentistry in Waldron, Helena, Mt. Ida and Charleston, Arkansas.

In 1947 Joe married Ava Nell Logan and they had 63 happy years of marriage. Throughout, they shared a love of family and together enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and attending the horse races at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.

Joe and his family spent over 30 years in Charleston, Ark. He and Ava Nell retired to Hot Springs in 1998. Over the years, they retained many friends from their towns of residence and enjoyed a lively social life.

Joe is survived by his three children, Anna Paxton (Mark), of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Greg Luther (DeeDee), of Fayettevil­le; and Thad Luther (Lynn), of Little Rock; grandchild­ren, Bob and Todd Smoot, Justin, Josh and Mitchell Luther and Christene Paxton; and seven great-grandchild­ren. The family would like to give thanks and recognitio­n to loyal caregivers Tammy Dodd and Marjorie Maughan, with gratitude for their years of service.

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE — Capt. William J. “Bill” Mulcahy USN (Ret.), 86, of Hot Springs Village, Ark., passed away on March 29, 2018. He was a proud Vietnam War veteran who served his country with distinctio­n for

22 years in active service and, in retirement, was devoted to veteran affairs.

He was born to William and Anna Bidese Mulcahy on July 26, 1931, in Chicago, Ill. In 1953, he joined the Navy and began a distinguis­hed and decorated career that included, among others, stints as Commander of Helicopter Squadron 3, Operations Officer of the USS Iwo Jima, and the Executive Officer of Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron 3, the Seawolves. He retired with full honors in 1975.

Bill flew helicopter­s for Petroleum Helicopter­s in the Gulf of Mexico until 1979, when he moved to Saudi Arabia to fly for Arabian Helicopter­s. He joined ARAMCO in 1986, became Helicopter Safety Pilot and was appointed Training Supervisor until his retirement in 1993.

A resident of Hot Springs Village, Bill joined and was active in the Military Officers Associatio­n of America, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Lucy Solano Mulcahy; and daughter, Claudia Mulcahy. He leaves behind his loving wife, Barbara Mulcahy of Hot Springs Village, Ark. He is also survived by his first wife, Nancy Henderson, and their children: daughter Catherine Mulcahy, sons Richard and Michael Mulcahy (Joan Sheldon), all of San Diego, Calif. His stepchildr­en, Bernadette Gallego (Ed), Pilar Martinez Miranda (Eduardo), Angela Almario (Hector), Susie Milne (Tim) and Christina Gaston (Joey), all of the Philippine­s, and Benjie Borromeo (Maria) of New York City; 21 grandchild­ren; and nine great-grandchild­ren all mourn his passing.

McGEHEE — Billy Joe Myers passed away on April 7, 2018 at the age of 89. His parents Ora Vardaman “Jack” Myers and Marnette Dishongh Myers preceded him in death. Billy Joe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edwardeen Burgess Myers. He is also survived by his son, Allen Myers (Little Rock), daughter, Lee (and husband Steve) Wiseman (Birmingham, Ala.), grandson, William Mason Wiseman (US Air Force), brother, Ben Allen Myers (Brinkley, Ark.) and his sister, Wanda Lynn Landry (Washington, Ill.).

Billy Joe was born in McGehee, Ark., and lived his whole life there. He worked for Shelter Insurance Company as a District Sales Manager and State Sales Manager until he retired in 1993. He had a lifelong passion for fishing and hunting, and loved going to the horse races at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.

Billy Joe had the opportunit­y to travel the world on company trips, and fulfilled a lifelong dream when he attended the Kentucky Derby. Billy Joe lived life to the fullest and never met a stranger. He was a member of McGehee First Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service in McGehee, Ark. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. ROSE BUD — Ladotta Mae Barlow, 80, of Rose Bud, died Saturday, April 7, 2018. She was born November 28, 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of Rufus and Laodice Stevens.

Ladotta “Dot” is survived by one son, Ricky Barlow and wife Peggy; three grandchild­ren, Shauna Barlow Pate and husband Murry, Isaiah Barlow, and Rygel and wife Cassie Fortner; three great-grandchild­ren, Mallory Pate, Zayla and Ellece Fortner; two brothers, Jerrell and wife Joyce Stevens, Leon and wife Tina Stevens; and many nieces, nephews, friends and family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Max Barlow, and her parents.

“Dot” was a 33-year employee (bookkeeper, treasurer, and secretary) of the Rose Bud Public Schools, and a member of the Mount Bethel Free Will Baptist Church.

SEARCY — Mrs. Faye Elizabeth (Black) Stearns passed away at Harding Place, surrounded by family on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the age of 82. She was born June 19, 1935 in Bradford, the daughter of Washington Earl and Clara Elizabeth (Willis) Black. On December 17, 1956, Miss Faye Elizabeth Black married Mr. Emmett B. Stearns, and together they spent 56 years.

Mrs. Stearns retired in 2000 from General Industries, where she was a Quality Control Inspector, and had worked over 20 years. She enjoyed landscape painting, quilting, and raising a garden with Emmett. Mrs. Stearns was a sweet lady who, more than anything, loved spending time with her family. She was a member of the Crossroads Church of Christ.

Mrs. Stearns was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett; three brothers, Frank, Charles, and Leonard Black; and one sister, Irene Winchester. She is survived by two sons, Michael Stearns and wife, Rhonda, of Cabot, and Dennis Stearns and wife, Julie, of Searcy; one daughter, Debbie Anselmi of Bald Knob; four grandchild­ren, Craig Anselmi and wife, Candace of Bald Knob, Kristopher Webb and wife, Autumn of League City, Texas, Kristen Taylor of Cabot, and Amanda Lacey of Hot Springs; six great-grandchild­ren, Claire, Austin, Connor, Stephen, Maddie, and Caden; four nephews; 11 nieces; and a lifetime of friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday, 10-11 a.m. Graveside services are 11:30 a.m. at Heard Cemetery. ARLINGTON, Texas — Vitula Taylor McLeroy, age 71, died on Saturday, April 7, 2018, after a brief illness. She was born on March 22, 1947, to Ella Rogers Taylor and Ed Taylor, both deceased.

Vitula, known as Vi to her friends, spent her elementary and secondary education in the Hazen Public Schools. She graduated from State College of Arkansas in 1969 with a B.S. degree in mathematic­s, and received her Masters Degree from the University of Arkansas in 1987. She taught middle school math in Stuttgart and Springdale, Ark.; Starkville, Miss.; and in Arlington, Texas.

She was a lifelong Arkansas Razorback fan as well as an avid Texas Rangers baseball and a Dallas Stars hockey fan. She and her husband, Paul McLeroy, enjoyed traveling, especially to the Caribbean, as well as trips overseas to Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Vi is preceded in death by both of her parents; her half-brother, Richard Gene Taylor; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by her brother, Roger Lynn Taylor and wife, Becky of Melissa, Texas; nephews, Brett Taylor of Allen, Texas, and Russ Taylor of Rogers, Ark., Dean Taylor of Jonesboro; and brother-in-law, Leonard James McLeroy (Penny) of Conway.

Although Vi had not lived in Hazen in many years, she enjoyed visiting with former classmates and relatives at least twice a year.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 11, 2018, from 6-8 p.m. at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen.
