HOPE —Two trainmen were instantly killed, and twenty passengers injured, many severely, when Missouri Pacific fast train No. 2, the “Sunshine Special,” north bound, ran into an open switch at Chelsea, three miles north of here this morning at 1 o’clock. The engine and five coaches left the track. The train was making 50 miles an hour when the wreck occurred. It is believed that the switch was thrown open purposely to “catch” a troop train, as No. 3, south bound, had passed only about 10 minutes before.

The county voter registrar and his employees may not go to nursing homes to get nursing home patients to cast absentee ballots, the attorney general’s office suggested Monday. Norman S. Watkins of Huntsville, Madison County treasurer, requested the ruling. Assistant Attorney General Tom Tanner wrote the opinion. Although the opinion did not flatly state that taking ballots to nursing homes was illegal, Tanner said he knew of no statute permitting any other means of casting an absentee ballot other than these: Casting it in the clerk’s office, casting the ballot by mail or having it delivered to the clerk by the voter’s husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, brother, or sister.

CLINTON — About 60 people marched Thursday to protest the barring of a student from graduation ceremonies because he wore shoes deemed inappropriate by school officials. Onlookers watched with surprise and some honked horns in the normally quiet Van Buren County town as the group marched from downtown to Clinton high School. The protest came after Principal Dwight Hutto refused to allow Dan Elliot to march in graduation ceremonies May 28 because he wore Nike shoes. “If the shoe fits, let him wear it,” Karen Ellis said loudly as she marched.

A Miller County jailer has been arrested after authorities say he tried to smuggle drugs and syringes to inmates — the latest in a series of troubles at the Texarkana lockup. The weekend arrest of Jordan Michael Waller marks the second time this year a jailer stands accused of trying to sneak contraband to inmates. In addition to the staffing problems, the jail has struggled with unruly inmates, beatings and escapes this year. County officials say security improvements are in the works. And the newly elected sheriff who takes office in January says he plans a number of changes at the jail.
