CLAY DEAN HAMILTON, 85, of Little Rock, died Saturday night, June 30, 2018 in the VA Hospital.

He was born

April 28, 1933 in

Norris, Oklahoma. Clay grew up in eastern Oklahoma and California’s San

Joaquin Valley.

He dropped out of school and left home at age

17 to join the U.S.

Navy, serving on the aircraft carrier USS Philippine

Sea during the

Korean War. He joined the U.S.

Air Force in the early 1950s soon after completing his Navy service. High scores on aptitude tests placed Clay in the Air Force’s data processing group where he learned to program IBM’s punched card tabulating machines, the forerunner of large mainframe computers.

He left the Air Force in the early 1960s, returning to live briefly in California. Soon, though, Clay and his brother Archie both bought farms and moved their families to what was then rural Round Mountain, just outside of Conway, Arkansas. The two brothers had married sisters, and none of them had ever lived in Arkansas. Clay found work in Little Rock as data processing manager for the company that was to become Affiliated Foods. He led the organization’s transition from tabulating machines to an IBM mainframe computer.

Clay was an entrepreneur. He struck a deal with his employer to lease time on the company’s large computer when it was idle at night, and he began selling automated office services to local businesses that were manually producing payrolls, bills, A/P checks, inventories and financial statements. Clay was both a talented computer programmer and a gifted salesman. He soon resigned his position with Affiliated Foods and literally worked day and night to make his new business a success. Within a few years, he sold this business to Systematics Inc. and moved on to other projects. During his life, Clay launched a number of new enterprises. Several of them failed, but some were successful, including his last. In his late seventies, he operated a computer sales and repair business from a wheelchair in Little Rock’s Landmark community.

Clay is survived by his wife of 19 years, Wilma Hamilton of Little Rock, Arkansas. Surviving children are Ana Hamilton of San Diego, California; Clay Hamilton Jr. of Sherwood, Arkansas; Debbie Funderburg of Clovis, California; Elizabeth Wisener of Madera, California; Aretta Gordish of Bethel, Connecticut; and John Hamilton of Madera, California. Survivors also include a sister, Jean Porter of Sherwood, Arkansas; a brother, Lynn Hamilton of Little Rock; 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

The family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff of Little Rock’s VA hospital for their attentive care and intensive treatment during the last six years of Clay’s life. He will be buried near his brother, Archie, in the Round Mountain Community Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

–––––❖––––– MARY ELLEN FINGER WHITE, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, 84, passed away on

July 3, 2018. She was born in Little

Rock, Ark. on December 29, 1933 to Bascom Felton and Hazel Finger.

Mary Ellen graduated from

Little Rock High

School in 1951 and was a member of the Beta

Club and National Honor Society.

She was offered a scholarship to

Little Rock Junior

College (now

UALR), but decided to go straight to work.

She was a retired secretary having worked most recently in the medical field. She co-owned Frick’s Drug Store in the 1960’s and later worked at the old Missouri Pacific Hospital, St. Vincent Infirmary and Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

Her first job was with Lewis and Norwood Insurance Company where she was remembered years later as holding the record for figuring the most correct premiums, typing policies with the fewest errors, and producing the most policies in shortest time. This was before calculators, when premiums were figured with pencil and paper and typed on manual typewriters.

Her father was an employee of Rock Island Railroad and she attained a love of railroading and the people associated with it throughout her life. While working for Lewis and Norwood, she was offered a position at the Rock Island as a secretary for the assistant Superintendent which she readily accepted. After deducting funds to help her parents with monthly expenses she was able to buy many as shoes she as wanted – her only luxury at the time.

She was a fourth generation member of Winfield United Methodist Church. When the congregation moved west, she chose to stay at the current location at 16th and Louisiana Streets, where it became Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church. Over the years she was an active member, Sunday School Teacher and United Methodist Women.

She loved her God, family and country. It is very fitting that she passed from this life an hour before July 4th, her favorite holiday, free from pain and suffering with our Heavenly Father.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Jean Major and Jackie Hendrix and former husband and father of their children, Van Harold White. She is survived by her children, Pam (Rickey) Mills, Jeanie White Wright, Van Harold (Hal) White Jr (Tara); grandchildren Tony, Alicia, Erica, Sarah, Kathryn, Haleigh, Blaykleigh and Victoria; great-grandchildren, Riley, Reece, Sage, Landon and Cole (due in mid-August).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 7th at Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church with Pastor Keith Coker officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday, July 6th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Arkansas Hospice, especially Cynthia, Christine, Sara and Ashton for taking such wonderful care of our mother during her last days on earth. Memorials may be made QQUMC, 1601 S. Louisiana Street, Little Rock, Ark. 72206. Arrangements by Little Rock Funeral Home, (501) 224-2200. Mary Ellen’s online guestbook may be signed at www. littlerockfuneralhome.com.
