ASU fills two new positions with longtime staff members
Arkansas State University Chancellor Kelly Damphousse announced Thursday the appointment of a new dean and a new special assistant.
Martha Spack, 40, a member of the student support staff, will become dean of students beginning Sunday. In 2008, Spack became director of the Leadership Center, providing oversight for several areas that will now compose the Office of the Dean of Students: the Student Activities Board, the Student Government Association, the Student Union, Greek Life and Residence Life. The dean of students also will oversee Student Conduct and the Red W.O.L.F. Center.
Lonnie Williams, 64, is now special assistant to the chancellor. In his new role, he will continue to direct the university’s Student Health Center and the Counseling Center. He will also assist with the student conduct appeals process and manage other tasks for the chancellor’s office.
Both positions report to the chancellor and the changes are part of Damphousse’s reorganization of campus administration. In June, Damphousse announced the creation of two new administrative positions and the reorganization of several administrative divisions.
He said in June that the reorganization is designed to put a new focus on student recruitment and student engagement.
Of the changes that he announced on Thursday, the chancellor said, “The goal of these changes is to more clearly define roles and focus …”
Damphousse became chancellor of ASU, which has more than 14,000 students and more than 80,000 alumni members, on July 1, 2017.
Spack and Williams have doctoral degrees. Spack, who had a salary of $63,000, will be paid $90,000 as dean, according to Bill Smith, associate vice chancellor for marketing and communications. Williams’ salary will remain at $136,000, Smith said.
