BOXING Pacquiao KOs Matthysse
Manny Pacquiao clinched his 60th victory with a seventh-round knockout Sunday of Argentinian Lucas Matthysse, his first stoppage in nine years. Pacquiao, 39, said he worked hard but was surprised by the swift victory in the World Boxing Association welterweight title fight in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Pacquiao rebounded from his disappointing loss last year to Australian Jeff Horn and his victory could extend his boxing career that had taken a backseat to his political life as a Filipino senator. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad also attended the fight, the biggest boxing match in the country since 1975 heavyweight clash between Muhammad Ali and Australian Joe Bugner.
BASEBALL Ramos may go on DL
Tampa Bay catcher Wilson
Ramos is likely to miss Tuesday’s All-Star Game after leaving Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Twins with left hamstring tightness. Named the American League’s starting catcher, Ramos said he’s “probably” going to face a stint on the disabled list. He injured the hamstring running to first base in the sixth inning of Tampa Bay’s 19-6 victory. Ramos, who was named an All-Star for the second time and first time as a starter, has hit .297 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI this season.
Cespedes to return soon
Yoenis Cespedes could be back in the New York Mets starting lineup when they take on the Yankees as the Subway Series reconvenes next weekend after the All-Star break. Manager Mickey Callaway said that the opportunity to have Cespedes serve as the team’s designated hitter against the Yanks at Yankee Stadium is “a consideration.” The three-game set begins Friday. Cespedes hasn’t played since May 13 because of a hip flexor strain.
