Lonoke County Library System ............................

-

Offering four branches, the Lonoke County Library System works to meet the diverse needs of the communities it serves. In addition to services that patrons might expect from their local library, the library system offers digital databases, internet access, fun programs and much more. Community involvement is a hallmark of the library system, said Kathleen Frankl Ashmore, branch manager for the Cabot Public Library, who added that the libraries tailor their selection of books, movies audiobooks and games to community requests. “Walk into any of [the libraries], and you will see programming that complements what your children are doing at school and programs that give adults a chance to learn, socialize and explore new hobbies,” she said. “We are more than libraries; we are an extension of the community.” Ashlee Minson, branch manager of the Margorie Walker McCrary Memorial Library in Lonoke, said her branch has teamed up with Lonoke Primary School to continue children’s education throughout the summer. She added that the library has also partnered with the Lonoke 2022 action team and the Lonoke County Master Gardeners. “We are so excited [to see] how far the library has come and cannot wait to see where we will go from here,” she said. The libraries help complement children’s school education through a variety of informative programs. Rachel Felts, branch manager for the Carlisle Public Library, said the children’s coding program at her branch is a big hit among youngsters. “It is so nice to sit down with the kids and learn right along with them while also having fun,” she said. “They really like coding the Ozobots and making the Sphero robot dance. We also have do-it-yourself programs that all ages enjoy, making items that include bath bombs and take-home food mixes.” Libraries have changed in many ways over the years but are still committed to helping communities thrive. “I like to help patrons find information that they may be looking for or help them find that great read,” said Nan Palmer, branch manager of the William F. Foster Library in England. “I’m constantly having to learn new things to keep pace with today’s trends because today’s librarian doesn’t wear glasses and a cardigan; we are tech-savvy and people-oriented.” GOOD TO KNOW: The Lonoke County Library System also employs a fulltime genealogist, Leisa Horness, to help patrons trace their family histories. The library system offers free access to the Ancestry. com library edition, provides genealogy workshops at all branches and hosts a history-oriented public Facebook group, Cabot & Lonoke County Local History.
