Throughout life’s journey, we are constantly faced with “don’t do this,” and “don’t do that.” It’s easy to become obsessed with the fear of doing things wrong.

When it comes to looking for a job, however, there are plenty of “must do’s” that can help you move forward on a new career path.

➤ Approach your job search like it’s a real job. During the search, begin each day early, and end late. Be organized and professional.

➤ Perform excellent work by preparing a well-written resume. Do get professional help to put one together if you aren’t able to create an impressive document yourself. It takes a real skill set to put together an effective document.

➤ Research newspaper and online job listings regularly for new openings.

➤ Follow up with the companies that are currently offering positions that interest you the most and fit your qualifications the best.

➤ When applying for a position, be extremely polite to everyone you meet. Nice companies hire nice people.

➤ During the job interview, have a list of good questions to ask concerning the company, its customers and its goals.

➤ Prepare a bullet-point list of things you want to make sure are mentioned about your skill sets, interests and capabilities during an interview.

➤ Always dress professionally when you’re going to have any type of contact with an individual associated with a company with which you are pursuing a job.

➤ Your shoes should always be polished prior to an interview.

➤ Take a note pad or folder with you during the interview, and always carry a couple of extra copies of your resume.

➤ Learn how to use the internet for resume submissions, or have someone available to help you.

➤ Ask people who know you well what skill sets and value you offer a company. Those answers are important information for you to pass along to potential employers in your cover letter, resume and thank-you notes, as well as during the interview.

➤ Send copies of your resume to friends and relatives, as they may know of a position that would be perfect for you.

➤ As you have interviews and pursue job positions, be confident without being obnoxious about your skill sets and accomplishments.

The one “don’t” that’s too irresistible to omit is this: Don’t give the job-search effort anything less than 100 percent of your energy and attention.

Do get started right away. Good luck!
