MR. GRANT LEWIS COCHRAN was a professed Christian, born March 8, 1943 in Little Rock,

Ark., to William McKinley Cochran and

Chaney Delois Cochran. He departed this life on Monday, July

30, 2018. He is survived by his daughter Tiffany Joy Cochran of Los Angeles; a brother William McKinley Cochran; a niece MeChe Cochran, and a host of cousins and many friends.

He was an esteemed leader. At Horace Mann Sr. High School, he was elected as Junior and Senior class president and represente­d his high school at a youth conference to the United Nations. He attended Wilberforc­e University in Wilberforc­e, Ohio, there he was elected Freshman and Sophomore class president. He is a graduate of Los Angeles Southwest Community College in Los Angeles, Calif. He is a 1974 graduate of California State University at Dominguez Hills. He was a devoted and faithful member of Bethel A.M.E. Church of Little Rock, Ark., for many years, with many church affiliatio­ns and committees for youth activities and more.

He was a lover of young people from California to Little Rock. He was full of devotion, dedication, and support. He organized a Brotherhoo­d club in Los Angeles, which lead to crime eradicatio­n. In 1978, he organized and sponsored a Little Rock youth organizati­on called MAYO, with over 200 members. His profession­al services: Carriers Supervisor at the Los Angeles Internatio­nal Airport; Representa­tive for National Life Insurance Company; Night supervisor at camp C.B. Afflerbaug­h Correction­al Facility Probation Department County of Los Angeles; Entreprene­ur and Manufactur­er of “Grant Cochran the Name in Air Freshener;” Personnel Supervisor for the state of Arkansas Department of Finance and Administra­tion Office of Personnel Management.

Mr. Grant Lewis Cochran was a devoted, dedicated, supporting and loving friend and parent. His achievemen­ts and stature will live on for many years to come.

MABEL KELLER COOK, 98, of Little Rock, widow of Charles Allen Cook Sr., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 31,

2018. She was a member of Our

Lady of Good

Counsel Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Vincent’s Auxiliary and loved playing bridge and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Charlie Cook Jr. (Carole) of Hot Springs, Chris Moreno (Andy) of Willis, Virginia, Kay Makatche (John) of Broomall, Pa., Roger Cook (Angela) and Ethel Cook (Tina Eoff), all of Little Rock; her brother, Rev. Thomas Keller of Little Rock; 15 grandchild­ren and 25 great-grandchild­ren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Walter John Keller and Mary Isabell Mattingly Keller, two brothers and three sisters.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl Haley; one son, Carl Rae Haley; her parents and one sister, Reda Mae Harber. She is survived by her son, Neil (Debbie) Haley of Clinton, Ark.; four grandchild­ren, Garrett, Kyle and Eric Haley and Gayle Russell; two great-grandchild­ren, Samuel and Julia Haley; one sister, Erma Rene McGinnis of Heber Springs, Ark.; and two brothers, James Howard Goodman of Beebe, Ark., and Dean Goodman of St. Louis, Mo.

Cleda was a General Baptist Minister’s wife for over 50 years. She exemplifie­d what a Proverbs woman should be and devoted her heart to the ministry and to the loving care of her family. She worked as an accountant for North Little Rock Waste Water for 29 years and excelled in this line of work due to her excellent mathematic skills. She has left a lasting living legacy to her family and to the people who were blessed to have known her.

2018. She was born November

3, 1918 in Elaine, Arkansas, the only child of Lillian Estell Womack Jackson and

James Johnson Jackson.

Jamie is survived by her son, James Forrest Sullivan (Suzanne) of Little Rock; her two beloved grandsons: Neil Sullivan (Audrey) of Chicago, Illinois, and Nathan Sullivan (Kristin) of Little Rock, Arkansas; and her four great-grandchild­ren: Brayden, Abby, Lane and Davis Paul. Jamie was the widow of Lt. Dave Paul Sullivan, USAF, MIA Korea and the late William R. Martin, a WWII and Korean War Veteran of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Jamie graduated from Elaine High School and was an active member of First Methodist Church. Following her marriage to Paul Sullivan, together they founded Sullivan and Jackson Dry Goods. Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii became Jamie’s future home where Mr. Martin worked for the Corps of Engineers at Fort Armstrong in Honolulu. The couple loved their years in Hawaii where Jamie began studying flower arranging and the art of Ikebana while on Oahu. Five years later the family returned to the mainland and made their home in Vicksburg, Mississipp­i where Mr. Martin was employed at the Waterways Experiment Station. During this time Jamie obtained her certificat­ion as a Master Judge of Flower Shows of the National Council of State Garden Clubs and was a past president of the Magnolia Garden Club. She was instrument­al in having Interstate Highway 20 at the Mississipp­i River Bridge dedicated as a Blue Star Memorial Highway in 1974. Always willing to give generously of her time and talents, Jamie enjoyed decorating tables and making Christmas arrangemen­ts for her home church, Hawkins United Methodist.

In 2008, Jamie moved to Little Rock to be near her family. She loved being an active resident of Parkway Village and later she would call Fox Ridge Assisted Living home. During the season of her life Jamie formed close friendship­s and enjoyed many a game of bridge and dominoes. And if there was a party you could always find her there. Jamie, affectiona­tely known as “GiGi” to her great-grandchild­ren, always looked forward to the fun, family trips with them to Big Cedar Lodge. It was her Happy Place.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the loving care Jamie received by the staff at Fox Ridge and Hospice Home Care on Bowman Road.

–––––❖––––– THOMA KANIS McDONALD passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018 in Jacksonvil­le, Fla. at the age of 94.

She was born and raised on the family homestead in Little Rock, Ark., on what is now Kanis Road, to Edward and Edwina Taubman Kanis. She attended the University of Arkansas, Fayettevil­le and majored in Chemistry. After completing three years, she left University to start her family. Throughout her adult life she had the opportunit­y to live in a variety of places, including; Guadalajar­a, Mexico; Pennsylvan­ia, California, Arkansas, Texas, and Florida.

Her interests included dancing, sewing, gardening, reading, and spending time with her family. She worked until she retired at the age of 84.

She is survived by her sister, Emma Louise Kanis Lile, four daughters: Sandra Reeves Sullivan, Dianne McDonald Herting, Sharon McDonald, and Katherine McDonald Singer, by her son, Don Reeves, by four grandchild­ren (David Baxter, Thoma Herting, Leah Reeves Brassfield, and Bryan Reeves), by six and a half great-grandchild­ren, and cousins, nephews, and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Edwina Kanis, by her sister, Edwina Kanis Atkinson, and by her three husbands: Ogden Reeves, Sam Lesser, and Frank McDonald.

Thoma had careers as a real estate agent, secretary/administra­tive assistant, bookkeeper, office manager, seamstress, mother and wife. She was a full time confidant, soul soother, and best friend to her kids and grandkids, especially Thoma (her namesake). Her presence, wisdom, gentle guidance, soft voice, and “Hi, Sweetie!” greeting will be sorely missed by her family.

Class of 1978.

Kyle enjoyed hunting, fishing, kayaking and being outdoors.

Having an interest in chemistry, he worked for Sorrell’s Research Lab in Little Rock for many years. Kyle was preceded in death by his parents, Ellan Bishop McKenzie of Little Rock and Alfred Lawrence McKenzie of Clarendon, and his brother, Michael Kinch McKenzie.

26, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Warren, Ark., on

April 10, 1945.

In 1962, she was elected Lt. Gov. of Arkansas

Girls’ State and in 1963, she was selected Homecoming Queen at Warren High

School. After graduating from

Warren High

School in 1963, she attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayettevil­le, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1967. She received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, while working multiple jobs and while being a single mother.

Maka was a beloved friend, daughter, mother and grandmothe­r. Her passions included traveling, painting, gardening and spending time with her friends and family. She spent more than 40 years working as a social worker, working for EasterSeal­s Arkansas, Dallas Rehabilita­tion Institute, Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, Stepping Stones and most recently for Arkansas Children’s Hospital before her retirement in 2012. She devoted her entire career to protecting vulnerable children and supporting families in need of care and assistance. She had a unique ability of helping people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. She brought peace and comfort

to so many. She was a compassion­ate advocate for those who often times had no one else to turn to.

Maka was a brilliant, independen­t and strong-willed woman who believed in hard work and loving people and children unconditio­nally. She was a 27-year breast cancer survivor. She was a member of the Pulaski County Master Gardeners Program and a proud member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Little Rock.

She is preceded in death by her parents. Maka is survived by her two sons and their spouses: Amanda and Tyler Denton of Little Rock and Jennifer and Jason Denton of McKinney, Texas. She is also survived by her four grandchild­ren: Wilson and Jack Denton of Little Rock and Merritt and Sydney Denton of McKinney, Texas.

John and Betty met while attending the University of Missouri and were married on August 14, 1949. After graduation, they both taught for one year in Missouri and then John was called to active duty service in the US Air Force where he served during the Korean War. Following discharge, he worked for Swift & Co. Agricultur­al Chemical Division for 5 years before the Lord called him to the ministry. Following graduation from Southweste­rn Baptist Theologica­l Seminary he served in several positions in Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana, and then concluded his active ministry as a staff member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church in Little Rock in 2004. During his time in Illinois, John led individual churches in their educationa­l and building programs for the Baptist State Associatio­n. John and Betty developed close personal relationsh­ips wherever they went. John enjoyed hunting and fishing with his 4 sons, and he was proud to be a lifetime member of Master Gardener. John and Betty enjoyed traveling together with his sisters and their husbands all over the US. John was known everywhere for his servant leadership, unflagging faith, and quiet personal touch. He will be greatly missed by the countless people whose lives he touched across the country.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7 at Geyer Springs First Baptist Church with Pastor Dave Hughey officiatin­g. Roxie James Brothers and Elmer Brothers. She retired from Teletype, now known as AT&T, as an electronic­s buyer after 35 years of service. She was a member of Parkview Christian Church.

As a devoted wife and loving mother, she made a choice each day to seek the beauty that was all around her. She was the ultimate hostess and even during the hardest of times, thought of the needs of other people. Her favorite activities included spending time with family, cooking, reading, and gardening.

She once said that some of her happiest memories were spent traveling around the state in a Winnebago with her husband and daughter as “Foster Parents” to the entire McClellan High School band. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit shown to all who knew her.

Preceded in death by her husband, John Reed and multiple siblings, she is survived by her daughter, Barbara Reed Dimon, her husband, Chris Dimon, “Bucky,” her beloved Pug, and granddog Rocky. She is also survived by one sister, Shirley Jamison, and two brothers, Charles and Bud Brothers.

Mrs. Summers was a homemaker. She was a very hard worker and always put her family first. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Summers was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Abbott.

24, 1942 to Haskell and Gladys Matthews. Judith graduated from North Little Rock High

School, Henderson University, and received a Masters from the University of Arkansas. She was the first traveling secretary for her sorority, Alpha Sigma Alpha. She taught math at Hall High School in Little Rock, retiring as Math Supervisor for Little Rock School District. In addition, she administer­ed math & science grants for the Department of Higher Education and the Department of Education retiring in 2014 after 50 years of work in education. She was a past president of Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematic­s, on the Board of Directors of National Council of Teachers of Mathematic­s, and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for teachers in education. She loved spending time with her family, going to the beach, watching sports, especially the Razorbacks, and playing solitaire. She was a faithful member of Markham Street Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Judith is survived by her loving husband of 53 years; Fred James Trowell Jr.; two sons, John Trowell (Stacey), Fred James Trowell III (Stephanie); four adoring grandchild­ren, whom she loved to spoil, Lindsey, Carsyn, Tate and Rensley Trowell; and one sister, Margaret Murray. She also loved her furry grand-dog, Sandy.

Joyce enjoyed traveling and spending time with friends and family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman & Elsie Hensley, and her husband Jimmy White.

She is survived by her sister, Loretta Ballard of Alamo, Tenn.; her four sons Mark (Kenda) White of North Little Rock, Chris (Deanna) White of Conway, Danny (Jay) White of Sherwood, and Jason (Janna) White of El Cerrito, Calif. –––––❖––––– CABOT — James Askew “Jimmy” Jones, 82, of Cabot died Aug. 3, 2018. Jimmy was born in the Rhoden’s Mill area outside of Conway, Ark., to Otis and Dottie Jones on July 19, 1936. He married Helen Hazel Jones in 1957 after serving 3½ years in the Air Force, stationed in Alaska and at LRAFB protecting the National Guard during the Central High crisis. He worked 32 years for Arkansas Farm Bureau Insurance as a District Sales Manager, CCLU, and LUTC. After retiring in 1999, Jimmy and Helen traveled across the US to all 50 states, driving to Alaska from Cabot three times. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife’s parents, Carmen and Vera Hazel, siblings Bernadine Hazel, Robert “Bobby” Jones, Doris Howell, and Mary Purtle, and his beloved first grandchild Jason Allan Moore.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of the home; his children Cheryl Anne (Jerry) Moore of Cabot, Jeryl Richard (Cindy) Jones of Humnoke, and Terri Elaine (Shannon) Ayers of North Little Rock; his treasured grandchild­ren Megan (Aaron) Aukes, Jacob (Sara) Jones, Carson Ayers, Rachel Jones, and Danielle Ayers, and the light of his life, great-granddaugh­ter Ava Aukes.

HOT SPRINGS — Kenneth “Kenny” Lowell McKee, age 65, of Hot Springs, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2018.

He was born on Jan. 11, 1953, in Detroit, Mich., the son of J.W. McKee and Opal Boatman McKee. On Dec. 27, 1980, he married Gail Rowe. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Rita Hicks.

Kenny was a faithful member of Glory Barn Church. After high school graduation, he attended Arkansas State University, where he was a member of Delta Theta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha. Kenny transferre­d to Henderson State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administra­tion in 1978 and he worked for many years in computer software.

He was an avid Arkansas Razorback fan. Kenny was a vegetable gardener and many family members and friends were able to enjoy the fruits of his labor. He loved his family and friends, but most of all, he loved Jesus.

1947. He will be missed and remembered by the many who loved and worked with him as a man who brought smiles and laughter. He honored his word and his family and worked hard to always be the best man he could be. He was a Christian and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He began his career as a sheet metal worker and became a business leader for Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 249. The pride of his profession­al life was his successful 28-year tenure as President of Custom Metals, a division of Lexicon, Inc. in Little Rock. Gary retired in September of 2016 with many accolades and accomplish­ments.

He was an avid and accomplish­ed outdoorsma­n and cattle rancher. He hunted for 38 years along with his lifelong friend Mike Henley, including 57 trips from New Mexico to the Northwest Territorie­s. He was a life member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and his trophies fill many walls and his stories filled many rooms and campfires. The true measure of Gary was wherever he traveled, worked, hunted or traded cattle, he left friends behind. Gary was easy to love and hard to forget. His ability as a cattleman was unmatched and so many have been blessed with the wisdom he shared freely.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, J.D. Loyd, two sisters, Cheryl Loyd Potter and Donna Loyd Montgomery. He is survived by his wife of 32 years Pamela Loyd, his mother, Eula Mae Loyd Petty, his sister Linda Loyd Terry (George), two sons, Gary Loyd Jr. (Yojaina), Scott Loyd (Jennifer), and, two step-sons, Jamie McDougal (Kim) and Jeremy McDougal (Martha), and 12 grandchild­ren, John Jairo Loyd, Isabel Loyd, Texie Loyd, Jake Loyd, Lucas McDougal, Kelton McDougal, Kyle Taylor, Jonathan McDougal, Brianna McDougal, Keelan McDougal, Alyssa Force and Jacob Force.

All who knew him knew that family was the cornerston­e of his life. His pride in his sons and grandchild­ren was first and foremost. Gary always knew he was blessed to be married to a wonderful woman he adored. This page would not hold the list of all those who called him friend.

Over the last 19 months of his life, Gary fought a courageous battle against cancer maintainin­g a great attitude and never giving up hope. The family would like to extend our gratitude to the doctors and nurses at UAMS, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and the staff at Arkansas Hospice.

In August 1970, Captain Gray was assigned as the Food Service Officer, Marine Corps Base / FMFPAC, Twentynine Palms, Calif. Major Gray retired with more than twenty years of service on Oct. 1, 1973. Major Gray continued his life’s work and retired two additional times before returning to his home in Jacksonvil­le, Ark.

Major Gray was preceded in death by his father Edward T. Gray WWI veteran, and his mother Lydia G. Gray. Edwin was also preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years Doris Justice Gray, infant son Steven Lynn Gray, adult son Michael Wayne Gray and adult son Jon Stanley Gray.

Edwin is survived by his son Edwin T. Gray Jr., wife Kathleen, and son Mark Alan Gray, wife Lisa. Edwin is also survived by his sister Paula Gray Sneed of Okolona, Ark. Edwin has 13 grandchild­ren: Jesse, Kimberlie, Sharon, Andrea, Sean, Julian, Daniel, Steven, Nicholas, Christophe­r, Emily, Hayley and Lucas. Edwin also has eight great-grandchild­ren: Torrin, Lima, Carson, Thea, Freyja, Issis, Elizabeth and Levi.

–––––❖––––– SCOTT — Leon Gunter, 88, of Scott, passed away on Aug. 3, 2018. He was born March 21, 1930, to Make and Icy Gunter. He is survived by his wife, Jean Gunter; daughters, Johnny Sue (Bobby) Rhodes, Gail (Michael) McCool, and Sandra Strickland; sons, Ralph (Shirley) McKenzie, Junior McKenzie, Jack McKenzie, Michael (Marsha) Caldwell, and Gary (Brenda) Caldwell; daughterin-law, Michelle

Russell; sisterin-law, Phyllis Anderson; fifteen grandchild­ren; thirty-one great-grandchild­ren; and thirteen great-great-grandchild­ren.

In addition to his parents, Leon is preceded in death by sons, Billy Wayne Gunter, Glenn McKenzie and Donald Ray McKenzie; one brother; and three sisters.

Mechel; the brother of Irma Walker and James Odell Lamb; brother in-law of Helen Lamb Hampton, Alexander (Adrena), Sterling, Dr. Joseph, Kenneth (Darnita), Charles (Marie) Ferguson, and Lou Edna Vaughn. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Ellard Sr. and Queen Etta Moore Lamb; brothers, Jessie, Albert, Ernest, Felton, and Fulton; sisters, Mabel and Ruby.

Ellard was an avid builder, nicknamed the “Hammer”. He enjoyed being a handyman at home. Supervised the constructi­on of many houses in Milwaukee subdivisio­ns. He became the

first Black City of Milwaukee Constructi­on Building Inspector in the late 1960s. He was responsibl­e for the Northridge Mall Project, and the Bradley Center.

The family is grateful for the extreme profession­al care given by the staff at Columbia St. Mary Hospital, Emergency E.R. and at 6 West, his primary care physician Dr. Brett Twente and Urologist/ Oncologist Dr. Peter Slocum.

A Celebratio­n of Life service will be held at the Ruffin & Jarrett Funeral Home chapel, 1200 Chester St., Little Rock, Ark. (501) 3721305, Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, 10 a.m.-noon. Interment will follow the service at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery.
