TODAY ‘Movies at MacArthur’
The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, 503 E. Ninth St., Little Rock, will screen the documentary Two Days in October, telling the parallel stories of an October 1967 Viet Cong ambush that nearly wiped out an American battalion in Vietnam and a student protest in Wisconsin against napalm maker Dow Chemical that spiraled into violence, 6:30 p.m. today part of the “Movies at MacArthur” series. Beebe concert
The Arkansas State University-Beebe Singers and Chamber Singers will perform at 7:30 p.m. today in the university’s Owen Center auditorium, 910 Pecan St., Beebe. WEDNESDAY Archeological lunch
Kathi Cande, senior project archaeologist and laboratory supervisor with the Arkansas Archeological Survey in Fayetteville, will talk about the Arkansas Archeological Survey’s work documenting and mapping historic cemeteries in a Brown Bag Lunch talk titled “Living Among the Dead: Documenting Cemeteries in Arkansas,” noon Wednesday at the Old State House Museum, 300 W. Markham St., Little Rock. She will also provide information for those are interested in doing their own cemetery research. THURSDAY Civil War for supper
Civil War historian Edwin Cole Bearss, historian emeritus of the National Park Service, will lecture on “General Pat Cleburne of Helena: The Stonewall Jackson of the West” as part of the Old State House Museum Associates’ annual supper Thursday at the Old State House, 300 W. Markham St., Little Rock, with a 6 p.m. reception on the front lawn and a 7p.m. seated supper and program. ETC. ‘Joy, unity & hope’
The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and Central Arkansas Library are seeking spoken-word poetry for what the two organizations are calling a “spoken word performance event focused on themes of joy, unity and hope.” Deadline is Dec. 3.
You may perform original work or a piece for which you have secured performance rights. Youngsters 18 and younger can submit their work, no more than three minutes long, either in writing or by video, through a participating library system branch or via email at teenpoetry@cals.org. Adults can submit online via odetojoy@arkansassymphony.org.
Finalists will perform for a panel of judges and a live audience Jan.10 at the Ron Robinson Theater, who will select performers to join the orchestra on stage at a Feb. 23-24 pair of Masterworks concerts at which the orchestra and a mass chorus will perform Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, including the last-movement choral “Ode to Joy.”
Library branches will host a series of special events, including spoken-word performances, mini-concerts and educational performances by orchestra musicians and panel discussions. The library system will also curate a multimedia collection of materials on the Beethoven symphony, its libretto and other topics relevant to the themes of the presentation. The Arkansas Symphony is also partnering with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to introduce students to the arts by offering free tickets to any 2018-19 regular season concert (Masterworks, Pops Live!, River Rhapsodies and Intimate Neighborhood Concerts) to all UALR freshmen. Karen Hayes, writer, performance poet, speaker and certified Alzheimer’s Poetry Project coordinator, will lead a “Poetry for Life” workshop for folks 55 and older, 11 a.m.12:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, 501 W. Ninth St., Little Rock. Participants will play with poems aloud, using call and response, and create a brand new group poem together. It’s part of the Arkansas Arts Council’s Get Smart! learning series. No poetry experience is required. Admission is free but reservations are recommended — sign-up deadline is Oct. 22. The South Arkansas Arts Center’s Theatre Steering Committee is taking applications through Oct. 26 for directors for two upcoming productions at the center in El Dorado:
You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, book, music and lyrics by Clark Gesner, based on the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz; additional dialogue by Michael Mayer, additional music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. Auditions, Jan. 14-15; production dates, March 1-3, 7-10.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, score by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, book by Peter Parnell, based on the Victor Hugo novel and the Disney animated feature. Auditions, May (dates TBA); production dates, July 18-21, 24-28.
Applicants should submit a letter of introduction, brief production plan and a short resume; qualifications should include knowledge of working with a community theater and experience working with all ranges of talent, including beginners.
