Prather House

Discover a piece of history in downtown home

- By Linda Garner-Bunch Advertising Feature Writer

Designed by architect Frank Gibb and built around 1890 for John and Grace Prather, this three-bedroom, two-anda-half bath home rests on a corner lot in what is now downtown Little Rock’s historic Governor’s Mansion District.

The Queen Anne Victorian home has been beautifully restored by the current owners, and they also rebuilt the carriage house, which has a studio apartment for guests. In addition, the front and side porches have been restored to their original appearance using historic photographs.

The main house features original cypress woodwork, doors, fireplace mantels and moldings. While the home’s original gaslight fixtures are gone, many of the home’s light fixtures are antiques.

The entry hall offers access to the front and back parlors, as well as the dining room. Each parlor features a stunning decorative fireplace; the two spaces are linked by restored pocket doors original to the home. The chandelier-lit dining room, which opens to the entry hall and the back parlor, features stunning woodwork and a stained-glass transom.

In the kitchen, amenities include cypress cabinetry, an electric stove, a microwave and a dishwasher. Just off the kitchen is a light-filled sunroom that’s perfect for use as a breakfast/morning room or a den.

Upstairs, the master bedroom has a sitting area and his-and-hers closets. The en suite bath is tiled and has a single-sink vanity and a tub/shower combination. There are two guest bedrooms on this level, along with a tiled bath that features a clawfoot tub with a shower.

The professionally designed back and side yards offer a peaceful, private haven for outdoor activities. Other amenities include an upstairs laundry room, an office with built-ins, a security system, a garage and more.

This house, located at 1721 S. Gaines St. in Little Rock, has about 3,268 square feet and is listed for $489,000 with Sarah Duke of The Janet Jones Co. No open house is planned for today. For more information or to schedule a private showing, call Duke at 501-539-1528.
