Left out some facts

-

You published a very interesting and informative guest column last Sunday by retired Arkansas Supreme Court Justice Jack W. Holt Jr. on the history of the Second Amendment and his opinion of the influence on it by the NRA. While I agree that his piece was mostly accurate, he left out two universal truths.

First, he omits the fact that the First and Second Amendments are mostly responsible for keeping our country free and allowing us to obtain most of what we have—and take for granted. (While I believe the First will ultimately be our undoing, that will be another letter.) The best example of this fact are the now estimated 7,000 marchers coming up from Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico to invade our land. Ostensibly, they come because they do not have the right to protect themselves in their own land—from both their government and the other criminals who would harm them.

Second, Holt omits the fact that only honest folks obey laws. Criminals do not. Again, look at the coming invasion. All who are interviewed tell of family members being killed, yet they have no means of protecting themselves. But for the Second Amendment, we all might be in the same position as those who want to come here for peace and security. We all should thank which ever god(s) we believe in for the Second Amendment and for the NRA’s efforts to keep it intact, and the Heller decision, the only U.S. Supreme Court decision to ever address the issue of the “individual right” to keep and bear arms.
