Sand Lizards return 7 under seasoned coach

Expectations are high for the Dardanelle boys basketball team, said Russell Sturdivant, who is going into his eighth season as head coach. “We always have high expectations and goals here,” Sturdivant said. “We are working every day to be a regional and state tournament team. “We bring a bunch of guys back who should be hungry after last season. I am looking forward to watching my guys compete night in and night out in this league.” The Sand Lizards finished 14-13 last year and return three seniors, including center A.J. Calavitta, guard Jacinto Diaz and forward Karsen Spears. “A.J. is very athletic and a strong 6-5 player,” Sturdivant said. “He has spent a lot of time in the gym working on his game to become a better post scorer. He is a game changer on the defensive end with his ability to block shots. “In the offseason, we think he has added more to his game on the offensive end.” He said Calavitta is one of the best athletes in the conference and could be a project for someone at the next level to develop his game, but athletically, he could compete at the next level. The coach said Spears, who averaged 5 points per game a year ago, is known more for his effort and toughness on defense. Sturdivant said Spears has steadily improved his offensive game and has the ability to finish both inside and out. “Jacinto is a lockdown defender who really came on late last season on the offensive end,” Sturdivant said. “He is our best and toughest perimeter defender and brings a bulldog mentality to the defensive end for us.” The coach said the Sand Lizards should be more experienced than last year after returning seven players with tons of playing time. “We lack size at the guard position, so we are going to have to be tougher both mentally and physically than our opponent,” Sturdivant said. Morrilton, Pottsville and Subiaco Academy are probably the front runners to win the 4A-4 Conference this year, Sturdivant said. “The conference is very good and very competitive, top to bottom,” he said.
