–––––❖––––– QUILLA MAE LANES GUIDEN, the first daughter and second child of Bennie Lanes Sr. and Elizabeth Covington Lanes, was born August 15, 1944 in Marianna, Arkansas. Quilla grew up in a loving and closeknit family with many siblings.

Her parents, two brothers, Frank Lanes and Johnny Lanes, and two sisters, Christine Lanes Buford and Darnita Hutchins, preceded her in death. Quilla departed this life on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Baptist Medical Center surrounded by her husband, daughter, family, and Sorors.

At an early age Quilla professed her faith in Jesus Christ and joined Paradise Missionary Baptist Church in Marianna, Ark., maintainin­g an active membership through her college years. She moved to Little Rock after her college graduation and joined Union African Methodist Episcopal Church. She remained a faithful member of Union until her death. She had the privilege of serving as the superinten­dent of the Union AME Church School for many years.

After high school graduation, Quilla and 23 of her classmates entered Arkansas Mechanical and Normal College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff). She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social science in 1966. Quilla later earned a master’s degree in educationa­l counseling. She completed additional graduate studies at the University of Missouri-Rolla and held certificat­ion in secondary counseling. While employed as an advisor at Philander Smith College, Quilla also spent time traveling to the West African countries of Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Senegal, broadening her love of adventure and culture. Quilla retired from North Little Rock High School after 40 years in various teaching and counseling roles.

In 1964 Quilla was initiated into the Delta Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. during her junior year of college. After college Quilla joined the Marianna Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., becoming the president of the chapter in the mid 1980s. As an active member of the Little Rock Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a staff member at Arkansas Baptist College, Quilla led the call for a chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to be founded on the campus of Arkansas Baptist College. In 2004, the Tau Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was establishe­d on the campus, and Quilla served as the chapter’s first primary advisor.

After her marriage to Samuel Baker Muhammad in 1982, Quilla received her long-awaited blessing of motherhood. In 1983, Samuel and Quilla became the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, Samaia Aquilla Muhammad. She poured so much of herself into Samaia, helping shape her into the dynamic young woman she is today.

In 2016 Quilla and WIlliam “Bill” Guiden were joined in holy matrimony at their church, Union AME. Quilla and Bill had two years together as one.

Quilla leaves to cherish her memory her dear husband William “Bill” Guiden of Little Rock, Ark.; her daughter, Samaia Aquilla Muhammad of Washington, D.C.; her godchildre­n, Al Rutherford of Dallas, Texas, Tara Summers of Houston, Texas, Rose Lee of Mabelvale, Ark., and Kelson Stewart of North Little Rock, Ark.; siblings Bennie Lanes (Pheliece) of Beebe, Ark., Larry Lanes (Karen) of Conway, Ark., Charlene Bazile (Carl) of Fayettevil­le, Ark., Carolyn Hill (Elias) of Marianna, Ark., Michael Hutchins of Oklahoma City, Okla., Jerry Hutchins of Oklahoma City, Okla., Teresa Hutchins-Barton (Carlos) of Marianna, Ark., Lenora Mason (Carl) of Waterbury, Connecticu­t, Derrick Patton of St. Louis, Mo., Oscar Patton of St. Louis, Mo.; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, foster children, students, Sorors, and friends.

–––––❖––––– HAMPTON TYLER HUDSON, 33, of Little Rock, Ark., and Melbourne, Fla., passed away peacefully on December 11 surrounded by his family.

–––––❖––––– On Thursday, December 6, 2018, Mrs. BERNICE MIDDLETON McDANIEL departed this earthly life at the age of 87.

Bernice was born on March 25, 1931, in Ethel, Ark., to the late Luke Cohn and Addie Jamison Bonner. After graduating from high school, she moved to Pine Bluff where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Arkansas AM&N College (now University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff). She went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of Arkansas at Fayettevil­le and a Specialist Degree in Education Administra­tion from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

She was a teacher for more than 35 years and touched the lives of countless children across the state. She was also an ardent supporter of the Special Olympics. Bernice had an adventurou­s spirit; she loved to travel and she loved TV game shows.

Bernice was preceded in death by two husbands, William Middleton and William McDaniel, and two children, Linda Diane Jones and Dwayne Johnson. She is survived by eight children, Danny L. Johnson, Angela R. Betton (Harold), Cecelia Johnson, Karen Williams, Estralita Smith, Myron Johnson, Chana Thompson, and William Middleton Jr.; two brothers, Robert and Wilford Jamison; 19 grandchild­ren; 30 great-grandchild­ren; five great-great-grandchild­ren; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was born on August 21, 1923 in Morrilton, Arkansas to William Henry and Willie Mae Stringer. Margaret was a member of Fellowship Bible Church. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family and traveling the country with John in their motorhome.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Helen Drilling (George), Myra Mae Calahan (J.E.); one brother, Harold Stringer (Jeanie); and great-granddaugh­ter, Reese Catherine. She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, John S. Robbins; two daughters,

Patricia Rowe (Cam) and Tracy Cotton; four grandchild­ren, Jason Rowe (Katie), Shannon Davis (Cody), Andrew Rowe (Jessica), Lyndsey Butler (Donnie); ten great-grandchild­ren, Zach, Colson, Crew, Westin, Reagan, Grady, Tejay, Aaren, Hazen, and Mallory and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

–––––❖––––– SANDRA LOUISE RIDENS TANKERSLEY, 63, of Mabelvale, passed away December 11, 2018. She was born on February 2, 1955 to D’Arthur and Wanda Moore Ridens. Sandy was a very loving and caring person. She worked as a nurse at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in the Neonatal Unit and many other places. Although she had no children of her own she taught and raised many.

She is survived by her loving husband, Wesley “Tank” Tankersley; step-children, Sandi Wright, Holly and Brock Thomas, Clint and Lindsey Tankersley; step-grandson, Bekett Thomas and step-granddaugh­ter, Lakin Tankersley; niece, Jessica Lane Lewallen; nephew Josh Harrell; great-nieces, Chy’Ann Harrell and Avery Grace Lewallen; great-nephews, Josh Harrell, Jr. and Carson Garrett; great-great-nephew, Ju’juan Patterson; and a special friend, Keenan Henry Wells.

Mary loved playing cards, playing Bingo, and taking care of the children in the church nursery and especially being with her family, which will miss her dearly.
