SEBASTIAN COUNTY, 1920 The Massard public school, dating from the 1880s on the outskirts of Fort Smith, took its name from French soldier T. Jean Massard, who had been awarded the land in the early 1800s. At the time the class posed before the school, the average Arkansas teacher earned $476 for a 124-day school year.
