–––––❖––––– Brother LEON BURL, 82, MSGT USAF-retired, of North Little Rock, was born to Vick and Angeline Burl on December 20, 1936 in Readland, Arkansas. The family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1944. He attended Elementary and High School in Little Rock graduating from Horace Mann High School in June, 1956. After

graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in South

Africa, French Morocco, Philippine Islands, Republic of Thailand, Europe, California,

New Mexico and

South Dakota.

While in Europe he met and married the love of his life, Erika Eudenbach of Solingen, West Germany in 1966. To this union one child was born.

After retiring, Leon graduated from Park College with a degree in Business Management and started his second career with the North Little Rock Housing Authority (HUD) and worked as a Hotel Manager until 2008. His peers respected him for his Job Knowledge and Leadership ability and sought his advice on many occasions. He truly loved God and his Job.

He was loyal member of the Little Rock Air Force Base Protestant Chapel Family, sat on the Parish Leadership Board and served as head usher on the 11 a.m. service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vick and Angeline Burl, sisters, Ruth Ann Carpenter, Ozeeda Christian, Alice Rainey, Ida Mae Harris, and Genoba Goods; by his brother Tom V. Burl and cousin Raye J. Montague. Brother Leon leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife, Erika Burl, one daughter, Gabriella Laster, sonin-law Darron Laster, and grandchild­ren, Landon and Arden Laster of Sherwood, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Anna was born August 30,

1950, in Paragould, to Russell and Laverne Waldrum. She graduated from Ouachita Baptist University where she met the love of her life, Dick. They settled in Benton, where both of her boys were born. Anna was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Benton, for more than 40 years. She loved going to the beach with her family, taking walks on the beach with her husband and putting her Fins Up at Jimmy Buffett concerts any chance she got. Anna was an excellent cook and loved to share the fruits of her labor with those she cared about, especially her family. Anna had a servant’s heart, always seeking out opportunit­ies to care for, love on and encourage others.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Russell and Laverne Waldrum; one brother, Larry Wayne Waldrum; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hugh and Evelyn Phelan; sister-in-law, Francie Phelan. His life-long hobby was music, especially the Beatles; and he and his wife shared a love for Razorback sports and NASCAR. Wayne was a disabled Vietnam War Veteran retiring as an Air Force Tech Sergeant with 20 years of service, receiving commendati­on metals. He was a founding member of That Church, Sherwood, and actively attended That Church, Cabot. Wayne was a 24 year member of the Arkansas Home Builders Associatio­n, served as a board member on the Associates Council, and was named Pulaski County Associate of the Year 1995.

Wayne was preceded in death by his Brother, Wally (Debbie) Wright and is survived by his Wife of 53 years, Carolyn Brown Wright; son, Scott (Sarah) Wright; Grandson, Brooks Allen (Kayla) Wright; great-grandson, Camden Wright; sister-in-law, Danita (James) Hart; bonus Daughter, Lisa Wilson; nephews, Jeremy (Becky) Wright, Zach Groves, Drew and AJ Collatt; Nieces, Tonya (Harles) Dash, Andy Collatt, Samantha (Jason) Ripper and Amanda (BJ) Young;

FORT SMITH — After a 21-year battle with prostate cancer, Paul R Johnson, 81, completed the last lap of his earthly race and joined his Heavenly Father on Monday, February 11, at Mercy Hospital in Fort

Smith, Arkansas. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife Stella; son

Paul; daughter Jennifer Parks

(Bryan Slavens); granddaugh­ter Aubrey

Parks; Stella’s son Lane Dooly

(Terri); Granddaugh­ter Sarah

Boen; grandsons Luke and Drew Dooly; great-Granddaugh­ter Jordan Boen; nephews Paul, Hardy, and Gary Hodgens; and nieces Yvonda Kissinger, Lisa Francis and Sabrina Watlington; and many, many dear friends across the country and the globe. He also leaves behind his training partner and faithful companion Sadie, his 10-year-old Australian Shepherd. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Smith.

He was predecease­d by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Wilson, and sisters Edith Hodgens and Virginia Anderson.

Paul was born in Branch, Arkansas, in 1937. He and his family moved to Fort Smith in 1938 where he attended Fort Smith schools and graduated in 1955. While at Fort Smith High School he worked in Jerry Klinginsmi­th’s print shop and made lifelong friendship­s. He graduated with a business degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayettevil­le in 1962 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and where he made more lifelong friends.

He started his insurance career with the Travelers Insurance in Little Rock, then was offered an opportunit­y at Rebsamen and East Insurance under the mentorship of the legendary “Bond Man”, Jack East. He took to the insurance business like a duck to water and following Mr. East’s path Paul made constructi­on insurance and bonds his specialty.

He moved back to Fort Smith in 1971 and along with Walter Moorman and Jim Russell started Johnson Moorman & Russell Insurance and Bonding.

Always athletic and a lover of sports of all kinds Paul began running in his late 30s and completed dozens of marathons all over the country, several triathlons and became a senior Olympian racewalker setting records all over the world and making many more amazing friends. He won more than 50 gold medals and was named Race Walker of the Year in 2001, 2003 and 2005. His record for the 10k set in 2008 still stands. He officiated University of Arkansas, Fayettevil­le, track meets for several years and even officiated track events in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Paul will be remembered by his family and friends for his intellect, dependabil­ity, sense of humor, and love of music, traveling, dogs and children. Paul and his family are grateful for the wonderful caregivers of Mercy Hospice and most especially Jenny, his nurse, and Shelby, his aide.

Paul has chosen to be an anatomical donor to the Arkansas Colleges for Health Education. A memorial service will be held at Edwards Funeral Home Friday, February 15th, at 2 p.m. and a visitation with the family will immediatel­y follow. HOT SPRINGS — Marian Doris Huggins, 88, passed away on February 10,

2019. Born September 4, 1930,

Marian was the daughter of the late Oscar

S. and Francis Nixon. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Frank H. Huggins Jr., and a brother, Donald Ray Nixon, of Conway.

Most of Marian’s life was spent in North Little Rock. She loved being a part of the North Little Rock School District and Gardner United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. After moving to Hot Springs, she and Frank were welcomed into the First United Methodist family. Marian also joined the Women’s Welcome Club of Hot Springs, became an avid bridge player, and served two terms as president of the Garland County Republican Women; Marian was awarded lifetime membership for her dedication and service.

Marian loved her country, lived life to the fullest, and felt very blessed to have three wonderful daughters, Donna Guenther (Stephen), Debi Cochran (George), and Dyan Prescott (Art); seven grandchild­ren; and 11 great-grandchild­ren.

During the last months of her life she was loved and well-cared for by Belvedere Nursing Home in Hot Springs. A visitation will be held at Gross Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 16 with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Scott Gallimore officiatin­g.

HOT SPRINGS — John David Lochala Jr., 49, of Hot Springs, Ark., died Tuesday, February 5,

2019. He was an incredible spirit who left this world too soon.

He spent the majority of his youth in Clinton, Arkansas, where he attended middle school, and then High School in Shirley, where he graduated from in 1988. In High School, he was known by his friends as New Wave Dave, because he was a trend setter in music and fashion. He was a lover of all genres of music and art and had an incredible quick wit that brought joy and laughter to those that were fortunate enough to know him. He was a gifted pianist/ composer and actor who shared this treasure with family and friends in a variety of settings. His love of gospel music was something that brought many of his friends together over the years.

After graduating from High School in 1988, he spent some time in Nashville, Tenn., then decided to pursue his bachelor’s degree in business and communicat­ions at University of the Ozarks in Clarksvill­e, Ark., where he had fallen in love with the campus when visiting the Wilson-Munger Memorial Chapel and a sweet little baby grand piano that was housed there. He graced the Seay Theatre stage in many production­s while in college – having a true gift of comic timing.

Upon graduation from Ozarks in 1993 he developed a career in finance working for American Express and then finding his passion for numbers working for UA Beebe and then at UALR in Little Rock. He was able to enjoy his love of the arts while in Little Rock. He leaves behind so many family, friends and wonderful memories that will be cherished.

–––––❖––––– REDFIELD — Floyd “Sonny” Johnson, 79, of Redfield, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2019. He was born February 22, 1939, in Pine Bluff to the late Elma “Buddy” and Edith Glover Johnson.

Sonny graduated from White Hall High School in 1957, then served in the US Navy for four years on active duty, then for six additional years in the reserves. He worked 8 years on the Trans Alaskan Pipeline in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and was also a master mechanic. He served as Mayor of Redfield for 14 years and also worked for Redfield Waterworks. He will be loved and missed by many.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Eileen Mezera Johnson, whom he married June 10, 1994, in Redfield; three sons, Cliff Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska, Jeff Johnson of Mayflower, and Todd Johnson of Germany; three daughters, Susie (Eric) Maynard of Redfield, Katie James of Redfield, and Leigh Anne James of Little Rock; six grandchild­ren; six great-grandchild­ren with another on the way; and 1 sister, Mona Pierce. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Linda Ray.

–––––❖––––– SHERIDAN — Billy Roy Smith of Sheridan, Arkansas, was born August 26, 1949, in Prattsvill­e, Arkansas, the son of the late Theodore E. and Ruby Lee Kelley Smith. He was a member of Philadelph­ia Missionary Baptist Church in Prattsvill­e and had retired after 20 years from the United States Air Force having served during Vietnam. He was an avid collector of coins, and movies. He enjoyed deer and squirrel hunting, fishing and donating to various charities. Billy died Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton at the age of 69.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James “Doyle” Smith and a nephew, James Derrell Smith. Survivors: brother, Jimmy Darrell Smith of Little Rock; sister, Peggy Lee Smith of Sheridan; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

–––––❖––––– SPRING HILL, Tenn. — On Friday, February 8, 2019, William (Bill) King Toler Sr., devoted husband and loving father of two sons, died at the age of 85.

Bill was born on April 29, 1933, in Augusta, Ark. By the age of 10, Bill had lost both of his parents and lived with his older siblings for the rest of his childhood in the Augusta area. With grit and determinat­ion, Bill left Augusta at 18 to attend Arkansas Tech where he enlisted with the US Army ROTC program. After his successful graduation from Arkansas Tech, Bill started a long and illustriou­s career as a US Army officer. After serving two tours in Vietnam, Bill worked his way to the rank of Lt. Colonel.

In 1955, Bill married Martha Joan Gibson, from Hampton, Va. They raised two sons, Bill Toler Jr. and Dave Toler. Joan died in 1995 and Bill was re-married to his childhood friend Elizabeth “Suzy” Potter in 1996. Bill and Suzy returned to their hometown of Augusta, Ark., in 1996 and would reside there until 2018 when they moved to Spring Hill, Tenn.

Bill was an avid outdoorsma­n his entire life and especially loved to fish. He spent many days salmon fishing in the rivers of Oregon and crappy fishing in the lakes and rivers of Arkansas. He was a lifelong baseball enthusiast and a loyal St. Louis Cardinals fan. Bill and his sons attended the Atlanta Braves game where Henry Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s career home run record in 1974.

Throughout his life, Bill embraced racial equality and was known as a man of integrity and compassion for his neighbors and his community. He is survived by his wife Suzy, two sons, and six stepchildr­en.

He was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and was recognized for extraordin­ary contributi­ons in 2004 with the Grand Cross of Honor. He was a past Grand Master for the Grand Lodge AF&AM Wyoming. He was also an active and ongoing supporter

of the Scottish Rite Children’s Language Clinic, the Internatio­nal Order of Jobs Daughters in Wyoming and a

CFD HEEL, serving on the ticket committee.

Charles is survived by his niece, Stacy Maatman, her husband, Dan, and their son,

Dakota; brother, Richard Moore, and his wife, Norma; and sister, Clara Dunn; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Jody. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; parents, Charles and Bertha Moore; and siblings, Gene Boyd, Curtis Moore, Jim Moore and Cappy Moore.
