OVERVIEW

Founded in 1877, Philander Smith College is a private, historical­ly black fouryear liberal arts institutio­n supported by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. The career-oriented college has a rich legacy of providing an educationa­l experience that embraces academic excellence, builds self-esteem, cultivates critical-thinking skills and prepares students to be servant leaders and advocates for social justice.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

With more than 25 academic programs and concentrat­ions, students have the opportunit­y to pursue the education that fits their passion and career goals. New academic programs are being developed in response to the changing demand in workforce needs. The Joycelyn Elders School of Allied and Public Health will provide students the opportunit­y to major in health care and public-health discipline­s. Additional­ly, through the college’s WISE P3 Initiative, programs in innovation, technology and economic developmen­t are being created. The Central Arkansas Coding Institute, along with the newly developed Cybersecur­ity Program, prepares students for careers in high-demand IT fields. A Mechanical Engineerin­g Program is also being establishe­d to provide education and experience­s for students with an interest in mechanical-related fields.

CAMPUS LIFE

The student experience at Philander Smith College extends beyond the classroom. With more than 30 student organizati­ons, there is something for students of every level of interest and background. The campus also hosts a number of educationa­l and enrichment experience­s for both residentia­l and off-campus students. Regular events include the Bless the Mic Lecture Series, which brings in nationally acclaimed speakers from across the country, and the S.T.A.R.T. Summer Bridge Program, which is designed to give incoming freshmen a five-week intensive academic program to help provide them with a seamless transition to college life.
