■ Fire of unknown origin among old paper and rubbish in the basement of the Bankers Trust building, Second and Main streets, at 6:30 p.m. yesterday at first seemed of serious proportions. Although the fire was confined to the basement and only slight damage by smoke was done in the building, a big crowd was attracted to the scene. … Quick and effective work was done at the direction of Chief Hafer, who directed two streams of water into two manholes in the alley, in the rear of the building. Owing to the density of the smoke, entrance into the basement was impossible for some time, but the two lines of water soon flooded the basement and extinguished the greater part of the blaze. Another line was taken into the building throughout the West Second entrance and firemen slid down the elevator shaft.

■ Three Little Rock businesses were robbed in a span of less than 12 hours Saturday and Sunday. At about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, two men, one armed with a small black revolver, robbed the Domino’s Pizza. … The robbers stole money from the register, as well as from employees and a customer, then forced everyone into a back room and ripped a phone cord from the wall before fleeing. … At midnight Saturday, two men robbed the Neighborhood Grocery … assaulting an employee in the process. An employee told police he was cleaning the parking lot when two men approached him and asked what time the store closed. As the employee walked away, one of the men struck him in the head with a black revolver. The man with the gun then forced the employee inside the store, robbed him of his wallet and searched his shoes and socks. Meanwhile, the other man pulled out a silver and black pistol, went in the store and forced other employees to give him money from the register, putting it in a black canvas bag. Both men then fled. … Just after 4 a.m. Sunday, a man with a black rag over his face robbed the Site store. … The robber pointed a handgun at the clerk, stole an undisclosed amount of money from the register and fled.
