WALTER J. “DUB” CLARK, age 90, of Sherwood passed away on April 21, 2019 in North Little Rock. He was born in Wynne, Arkansas, on February 18, 1929 to the late Walter M. Clark and Jennie Newsom Clark.

On September 22, 1950, Dub married the love of his life, Charlotte Sue Hurt. Together they had two children, Gary and Pam, and lived in De Valls Bluff and later Stuttgart. Dub was a meter reader for Arkansas Power and Light for over 40 years. Retirement didn’t suit him, so he continued to read rice well meters and farm with family in Reydell.

Dub was actively involved in First United Methodist Church of Stuttgart, Yoder Ruritan Club and later First United Methodist Church of North Little Rock. He was happiest when he was outdoors and will be fondly remembered as the best duck hunting guide in Arkansas County and trout fishing guide in Mountain View. His greatest joys were his seven granddaugh­ters and 13 great-grandchild­ren.

Dub was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Alene Sheppard, and granddaugh­ter, Heather Thweatt Shipp. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Charlotte; children, Gary Clark (Patty) of West Memphis, Pamela Randolph (Sonny) of Carlisle, sister, Irene Singleterr­y Hampton of Biscoe, brother Jessie “Bo” Clark (Denise) of Biscoe, and six granddaugh­ters, Shannon Nye (Scott) of Hedgesvill­e, W.Va., Melody Wassell (David) of Sherwood, Dr. Jamie Pinto (Jeff) of Carlisle, Dr. Candice Dye (Daniel) of Birmingham, Ala., April Simmons (Eddy) of Carlisle, and Jennie Stewart (Michael) of Little Rock, Ark. In addition, he is survived by great grandchild­ren: Matthew and Mia Nye, Hunter and Ava Wassell, Ava, Easton and Ela Pinto, Annabelle and Caroline Dye, McKinley and Riley Simmons, and Jack and Clark Stewart.

Dub took great joy in always helping out a friend and his final act of kindness is through his donation of human anatomy to the Anatomical Gift Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 6701 JFK Blvd., North Little Rock on Wednesday, April 24th at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First United Methodist Church of North Little Rock.

A great lady of the South, JUNE WATKINS CURDIE GARDNER, age 94, died Easter Sunday April 21, 2019 in Little Rock. A member of the Greatest Generation, she was a devoted traditiona­l Latin Mass Catholic, and a member of St John the Baptist Latin Mass Community, first in St Patrick’s Catholic Church in NLR and then at the new church in Cabot, Ark. She was born June 7, 1924 in Little Rock in the family home, which is still standing at 1301 Scott Street, LR, and a Quapaw Quarter house in the same block as the Villa Marre. Her childhood home is traditiona­lly known as the Rozelle-Murphy Home. Her mother and father were John Noble Watkins and Miriam Ward Watkins of LR. Her aunts, who owned and operated a French Tea Room during the Depression in LR, were Aimee, Blanche and Marie Mivelaz. Louie Mivelaz, her uncle, was a manager and French chef in the old Capital Hotel in LR near the turn of the century. Ms. Gardner attended Stephens College for Women, Columbia, Mo. and the University of Oklahoma.

At age 50, she obtained her degree at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. During World War II, she was a Red Cross volunteer and she volunteere­d at the VA in NLR writing letters to the families of disabled soldiers who had been sent to the VA for rehabilita­tion but they couldn’t physically write letters on their own. Ms. Gardner was a legal secretary and paralegal for 42 years for attorneys Charles Eichenbaum, E. M. Arnold, Griffin Smith and John Biscoe Bingham. She loved typing the scripts of Mr. Smith’s many Gridiron Shows.

She obtained her real estate and broker’s license and sold real estate for 6 years before retiring. She was an enthusiast­ic volunteer in the political campaigns of Governor Huckabee, Senator Cotton, Jim Keet and Governor Hutchinson.

She was predecease­d by her parents, and her sister, Miriam Watkins Cook of LR. She is survived by her son, Don N Curdie of Little Rock, niece Bobbalu Cook Hoefer (Andy) of Laramie, Wyo.; nephew Robert R Cook (Pam) of Owensboro, Ky.; niece, Jean Louise Scatizzi (Richard) of St. Louis, Mo., and so many friends!

She (on her walker) and her son, Don, could be seen going to so many local doctor’s offices and restaurant­s in LR. She loved Franke’s Cafeteria (friends Art, Sandra and Mary), Black Angus (friends Karla and Josh). In recent years she saw and was treated by so many excellent doctors in the area. She wanted to mention them because she knew their care helped her get to age 94! Dr. Rhonda Gentry and Cathy her great nurse; Dr. John Jones; Dr. Ron Hardin; Dr. Alex Orsini; Dr. Nancy Zuerlein; Dr. Richard O’ Anna; Dr. Rennie Bressinck; Dr. Matt Kagy; Dr. Lee Archer; Dr. Chris Pittman; Dr. Mark Dyer; Dr. Glenn Davis; Dr. Annette Meador; Dr. Angela Lovett. Dr. David Redding; Dr. Jay Lipke, Dr. Randy Jordan; Ms. Stephanie Padilla. Ms. Gardner had caregivers in her declining years. We give praise and thanks for Alice, Dayna, Kelli, Maria, Rosanne, Lynne, and C. J. Thanks to Hospice Home Care on Bowman Road for their kindness and love in her last two days. Ms. Gardner was a skilled stained glass craftsman, she played piano and organ, and she knitted some beautiful hats and blankets.

–––––❖––––– KATHY SHORT GRAVIS, age 63, of Little Rock, Arkansas passed away April 20, 2019. She was born August 11, 1955 in Little Rock, Arkansas and was the daughter of DeWitt and Carolyn Short.

She was an active member of St. Paul UMC and a Bible study leader at Community Bible Study. She graduated from Hall High School and has a Bachelor of Arts in fine arts from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She loved to play tennis, was an avid sports fan and a passionate follower of the University of Arkansas baseball team. She was also a devoted wife, mother, loyal friend and dog lover. Kathy never met a stranger and had an infectious laugh.

Kathy was preceded in death by her mother, Carolyn. She is survived by husband, Roger, daughter, Mary Carolyn, father DeWitt, brothers Sonny, Russ, and David, and faithful dog Camo.

Dorothy was married to Kenneth Hardester on December 14, 1945; he preceded her in death on December 15, 1985 along with a son, Paul Clinton Hardester on January 6, 2000. Six brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Serita J. Johnson and husband Mac of Hernando, Mississipp­i; five grandchild­ren, Bankston Johnson and Jessica Lindsey, Katie Hardester, Nadia Davidson and Samantha Taylor; two great-grandsons; two great-granddaugh­ters; a special niece and her caregiver, Margaret B. State University. Henry was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, volunteere­d with both the Immanuel Crisis Closet and the Arkansas Baptist Red Cross, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. In addition, he enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing and was an avid Razorback fan. Henry was a wonderful dad, grand-pa and great-grand-pa.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Mary Jo Paden; one son, Henry “Scott” Paden (Lisa) of Little Rock and one daughter, Mary “Susan” Elliott (Phil) of Enid, Okla.; three grandchild­ren, Amber Schrantz (Doug) of Edmond, Okla., Kurt Elliott of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Rebecca Paden of Little Rock, Ark.; two great-grandchild­ren, Allie Schrantz and Abby Schrantz both of Edmond, Okla. and one brother, Robert Paden (Dorothy).

He was preceded in death by his parents and his older

sisters, Mollie Brewer Crockett and Anne Brewer Stewart.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Martha Rice Brewer; his sons, Hugh Rice Brewer Sr., and Arthur Payne Brewer; his daughter, Dr. Martha (Marti) Brewer Sharkey; their spouses, Tina Jones Brewer (Payne) and Craig T. Sharkey (Marti); his six grandchild­ren, Andrew Payne Brewer (wife Jayne), Blake Morrow Brewer, Hugh Rice Brewer, Jr. (wife Liz), Leigh Taylor Allison Stidham (husband Tim), Caroline Brewer Sharkey, and Martha Christine Sharkey; and his four great-grandchild­ren: Micah James Brewer, Noah Payne Brewer, Emery Taylor Stidham, and Anna Margaret Stidham.

Hugh worked his way through college beginning at Arkansas Tech University before graduating from the University of Arkansas with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineerin­g. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Following graduation in 1959, he served in the Army as a 1st Lt. and Battery Commander of a Nike missile site on Lake Michigan in Chicago. He and Martha subsequent­ly returned to Fayettevil­le, and he earned registrati­on as a Profession­al Electrical Engineer in 1966. He worked as a Distributi­on Engineer for SWEPCO, as a Consulting Engineer with McClelland Consulting Engineers, and as President and CEO of Upchurch Electrical Supply. Upon retirement, he proudly earned his Private Pilots license.

Hugh was an active leader in the community and served as President or Chairman of multiple organizati­ons over the years including the Fayettevil­le Downtown Rotary Club, the Fayettevil­le Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas Air Museum, the Fayettevil­le Civil Service Commission, the Fayettevil­le Country Club, and the Arkansas Academy of Electrical Engineerin­g. In addition, he was Treasurer of the Arkansas Alumni Associatio­n for several years. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Washington Regional Medical Center, a member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank, and a founding member of the boards of both Abilities Unlimited and Fayettevil­le Creative School. Hugh was an active member of First United Presbyteri­an Church where he was an Ordained Elder and chaired many committees over the years.

Hugh received multiple honors and awards from the University of Arkansas and the Department of Engineerin­g for his years of service and leadership. In 2014, Hugh was honored with the Arkansas Alumni Community Service Award. In 2015, he was again honored with the Arkansas Electrical Engineerin­g Distinguis­hed Alumni Award. In addition, he was awarded the highest honor from the College of Engineerin­g by being inducted into the Engineerin­g Hall of Fame.

PINE BLUFF — Opal Maurine Lain Heird, age 76, of Pine Bluff, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2019. Born June 4, 1942, at Rock Springs in Drew County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Dunkin Lain and Margaret Hainley Lain. She moved to Pine Bluff as a child, and was a graduate of Pine Bluff High School. Mrs. Heird worked for many years at the Trophy House and retired in 2007 as a cafeteria worker at L.L. Owen School.

She loved her family and her home. Some people were “born to be a wife, mother, and grandmothe­r,” and she was one of those folks. Mrs. Heird enjoyed working inside her home, yard work, gardening, and washing her car. After her retirement she took great joy cooking at her family’s deer camp, the Lincoln and Drew Hunting Club. Mrs. Heird was also a member of Watson Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Sam Bridges Heird, whom she married on September 29, 1961; two sons, Sammy Heird and wife Patty and William Heird and wife Lisa; four brothers, Charlie Lain and wife Frances, Donald Lain and wife Jackie, Danny Lain and wife Sharon, and Mark Lain and wife Bobbie; two sisters, Marsha Lain Heird and husband Woody and Cheryl Lain Edwards and husband James; four grandchild­ren, Jessica Heird, Nick Heird and wife Abby, Hunter Heird and wife Lauren, and Seth Heird and wife Sarah; one great-grandson, Branan Heird; along with many other loving family and friends.

–––––❖––––– SEARCY — Jerry Calvin Harmon, 77, of Searcy left this life on April 22, 2019 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born on August 24, 1941 in Rose Bud, Arkansas to Leonard and Lucille Harmon. He was a retired veteran of the United States Army National Guard and served during the Vietnam era in the Navy. He also retired from Coca-Cola.

He is preceded in death by his father, sister-in-law Judy Harmon and brother-inlaw George Baker. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Geneva, his mother, Lucille Harmon; two sons, Brian Harmon (Tracy) of Searcy, Mark Harmon (Desi) of New Port Richey, Florida; grandchild­ren, Ashton Decker, Madison Harmon, Gunnar Harmon of Searcy, Bridget Harmon, and Natalie Harmon of New Port Richey, Florida; one brother, Charles Thomas Harmon; two sisters, Linda Fulmer and Cathy Baker, also a host of other relatives and friends.

Jerry enjoyed gardening, feeding his birds and fishing. He was very patriotic and was honored to serve his country. He was a family man who loved his wife, his kids, and grandkids.
