Will they stand up?

-

Let me begin by saying that I am a conservative Christian, Republican/moderate, and a civics teacher. I love our country and our institutions. However, I am feeling incredibly pessimistic as everything that our founding fathers stood for and that men and women died to protect in our country are being trampled right now by our autocratic king.

Now is a defining moment. It is apparent to all that the only real checks and balances operating in our government are the Supreme Court, the press who reports the truth, and rankand-file members of the bureaucracy who defy presidential orders and go behind his back to circumvent disastrous policies and orders. Congress is non-existent because Republicans are unwilling to acquiesce and stand up for truth.

Honestly, it is the craziest thing I have ever seen as an educator, parent, and citizen. If my boss told me to do a bunch of dishonest things, she would literally be out the door the next day. Instead, Republicans are choosing to celebrate the fact the offenses allegedly committed by the president do not rise to a level where they can be prosecuted. This is insane.

What do I expect? What do we, your fellow Arkansans, want from our congressmen? We are not the Trump base. We are hardworking citizens who do not need six more years of insanity. We want you to stand for integrity and what is right. We want you not to defend a man who is indefensible.

What if a group of core Republicans took bold steps to end the nonsense and vote for impeachment? The alternative is much worse … six years of utter chaos, legislation that does not get passed (or is rejected by the president after you have worked hard on it), and a conscience that there is no one we can defend to our children, grandchildren or God. It is inspiring to see Republican congressmen around the nation speaking up and out against the president. Why is the Arkansas delegation silent? LAURA MARSH Fayetteville
