LR school chief submits changes in key positions

- CYNTHIA HOWELL

Sadie Mitchell, deputy superintendent for elementary education in the Little Rock School District, is retiring from the district effective June 28.

The retirement of Mitchell, who has been a district employee for 36 years and earns a salary of $146,682, is one of several district leadership changes submitted by Superintendent Mike Poore for the approval of Arkansas Education Commissioner Johnny Key, who acts as the school board in the state-controlled school system.

The changes come in addition to previously announced plans for Marvin Burton, deputy superintendent for secondary education, to leave that post to become principal of the new Southwest High School that is scheduled to open in August 2020.

Veronica Perkins, the district’s chief academic officer since 2014, is resigning from the district where she earns a salary of $115,530.

Robert Robinson is recommended for the job of executive director of human resources after serving on an interim basis this past year. Robinson was previously coordinator of classified staff recruitment in the school system. His salary would be $122,892 plus a $1,200 car allowance.

Sherry Chambers, who has been principal at Chicot Elementary, is being recommended for the job of director of kindergarten through 12th grade literacy, which is a reconfiguration of responsibilities that previously focused on elementary school literacy initiatives. Sabrina Stout was previously director of elementary literacy.

Chambers’ salary would be $98,556, plus an $1,500 education stipend and $720 car allowance.

Additionally, Aleta Branch has been recommended to be the principal at Washington Elementary, replacing Katherine Snyder, who is retiring after working for the district since 1987. Branch’s salary would be $76,761 plus a $1,500 stipend for her education level and a $451 annual car allowance.

Tyrone Harris, a longtime district elementary school principal — currently principal at Brady Elementary — is being recommended for reassignment to the principal’s job at Romine Elementary. He would replace Suzanne Proctor, who has resigned after working in the district since 2012. His salary is $93,072 with a $451 car allowance.
