■ That the special session of the Arkansas legislature will be convened for the sole purpose of ratifying the woman suffrage amendment to the federal constitution, despite urgent requests that other subjects be included, was the opinion expressed by Governor Brough’s advisers yesterday. He said that if the legislators desire to enact other legislation, they may do so by a vote of two-thirds majority of both houses. The state constitution provides that only the subjects mentioned in the call for an extraordinary session may be considered until such subjects have been disposed of. By issuing the call for the one purpose, it was said, the sentiment of the people may be determined through the vote of the solons.

The severe storms were reported early in the morning but Thursday afternoon more storms developed in South-central, Southeast and East Arkansas, causing the Weather Bureau at Little Rock to issue a severe thunderstorm watch to be in effect until 9:30 p.m.

■ Winrock Development Co., the major developer in the west Little Rock area once known as Rock Creek Parkway, is moving farther into the ridges east of Chenal Valley with a large new residential subdivision. Winrock recently bought more than 150 acres from Melvyn Bell, the Little Rock entrepreneur, for $1.9 million, according to Circuit Court records. The tracts, which will be part of the new subdivision, are north and west of the St. CharlesSt. Michael area. Part of this land is north and contiguous to an 80-acre area known as the Shackleford dairy farm, which Winrock acquired last fall, through outright purchase or option, from J.W. Shackleford for $1.2 million. That tract is due west of the St. Michael addition.

PLUMERVILLE — A bullet fired from a stolen pickup fatally struck a police officer just after dawn Friday. The officer’s son, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy, rushed to the scene and watched as paramedics tended in vain to his dying father. Joey Cannon, a 27-year law enforcement veteran only weeks away from retiring, died from the gunshot in his chest at Conway Regional Medical Center. The fatal shooting, the first of an Arkansas police officer in more than two years, left the Conway County community of 854 reeling. “I’m feeling anger. I’m feeling sadness. I’m feeling both,” Plumerville Police Chief Bill Hartman said. “There was just no rhyme or reason to why Joey was shot other than somebody thought they’d get away with a stolen truck.” One suspect was arrested at the scene, and another was arrested later near Mayflower after ditching the pickup, officials said.
