July 15, 1919

■ Horace Hays and C.L. (“Slobbers”) Campbell, Little Rock young men, were arrested yesterday afternoon by Detectives Pitcock, Lewis, Salyers, Hays, and Moore of the Little Rock Police Department, and Constable Scott of North Little Rock, charged with breaking into several Little Rock stores within the last month and “blowing” safes. The arrests were made near Second and Maple Streets, North Little Rock where the boys were rooming. Five bags filled with silver coins and $400 in currency was confiscate­d by the officers. Keys to the safes were found in the men’s room, it was said.

July 15, 1969

TUCKER PRISON FARM — Three inmates escaped from Tucker Prison Farm in an exchange of gunfire about 4:20 a.m. Monday, but all had been captured by late in the day. They were identified as Jimmy Blake, 19, serving 17 years for burglary and grand larceny from White County; Larry Ewing, 19, serving 11 years for burglary, grand larceny, and escape from White and Independen­ce Counties; and John A. Hicks, 22, serving 15 years for assault and attempt to kill from Randolph County. Hicks was captured in the northern part of the prison by a dog crew from Cummins Prison Farm soon after the escape. Blake and Ewing were apprehende­d about 3:30 p.m. in the yard of a residence across the road from the Farm after a woman in the house spotted them and telephoned authoritie­s.

BATESVILLE — Authoritie­s placed a 31-yearold woman into protective custody this week after she reportedly became intoxicate­d by sniffing flea-and-tick dip. A report released Thursday by Independen­ce County Deputy Jim Rags-dell stated that he stopped the woman as she walked along a road Monday in a residentia­l area carrying a large knife. A resident of the Holly Hills community near Sulphur Rock reported the woman’s behavior. The woman told the officer she had the knife because “someone was after her.” A police investigat­ion revealed the woman had been sniffing a container of flea-and-tick dip that officers found in her boyfriend’s car.

■ A woman, who became stuck on a steep hillside Monday night at Emerald Park in North Litte Rock, was helped down by emergency response personnel. Fire officials found the woman around 9:30 p.m. about three-fourths of the way up the steep terrain near the intersecti­on of River and Paul Duke roads. A firefighte­r who climbed up to check on the woman noted that she had cuts on her left foot and right leg, according to reports. She was helped down the hillside by firefighte­rs and a life-safety rope tied to a tree.
