MOUNTAINBURG — A moonshine still was captured yesterday on the farm of Joel Burrow, four and a half miles northeast of Mountainburg, by Sheriff Crockett Bledsoe and Deputy Dave Moore of Van Buren, and Marshal George Roberts of Alma. Between 20 to 30 gallons of mash were destroyed by the officers who have information that a wagonload of whiskey was run at the still the day before their arrival. Burrow is being sought. The still was a homemade affair and was found about 150 yards from Burrow’s home. It was located in a remote place at a spring and was surrounded by large piles of brush to avoid discovery. Officers say it had been in operation for a considerable period.

RUSSELLVILLE — Robert K. Strosnider, acting forest supervisor, says vandalism has forced the nightly closing of nine United States Forest Service recreation areas in the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests. Strosnider said that beginning Friday the areas would be closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. He said vandals had damaged rest room facilities and used abusive language. “It’s a trend … not just here,” he said. “This same type of operation exists in other recreational areas across the nation.” Strosnider said bona fide campers would be permitted to use facilities.

■ A Pulaski County man broke the windows out of a car in his driveway, then set his mobile home on fire Monday night, sheriff’s deputies said. A witness told deputies he heard a noise about 6 p.m. outside his house in the 3700 block of Erwin Road, looked out his window and saw the man who lived in a neighboring house trailer using a crowbar to break windows out of a car. The witness told deputies the man then gathered some clothes from a clothesline and went inside the mobile home. A short time later the man drove away in a pickup, deputies said. The witness told deputies he then saw smoke coming from the residence and called 911. Deputies said they believe the fire was deliberately set and haven’t found the burned trailer’s owner.

MOUNTAIN HOME — A convicted animal abuser from Mountain Home has been arrested in Vermont after spending more than three years on the run, according to the Baxter County sheriff’s office. Tammy Hanson was arrested Saturday by Caledonia County sheriff’s deputies and is being held in the St. Johnsbury jail in Vermont. Hanson, and her husband, William, disappeared shortly after they were convicted of 20 counts of cruelty to animals in January 2006. The Hansons were arrested after nearly 600 dogs were found crammed into unsanitary kennels in the couple’s animal shelter in Baxter County. According to a press release from the Baxter County sheriff’s office, the pair were living in Sutton, Vt., under the names of Christine and Henry Miller, when the Caledonia County sheriff’s office got a tip that Christine Miller was the Tammy Christine Hanson on the Baxter County sheriff’s most wanted list. Baxter County sheriff’s officials did not know the location of William Hanson.
