Low Self-Esteem

-

Q. Dr. Garner, I think my dentist fails to recognize just how important a nice smile is to a person’s self-esteem. All of my life, I’ve gone to the dentist... and, all of my life, I’ve been very embarrassed with my teeth and smile. I keep bringing this up to my dentist and he just says, “Oh... your teeth are fine...you don’t need to do anything cosmetic to fix your smile”. My smile is NOT fine. I HATE my smile, and I dislike nearly everything about my teeth. All my 57 years, I’ve avoided smiling. This is a big deal to me Dr. Garner! To me, I think the way a person’s smile looks and makes them feel about themselves is even more important than whether or not they have a cavity! I’ve read your articles for years and seen all the pretty people in your ads and on your web site. I love the way you can transform people and transform their lives with your beautiful dentistry. I talked to my friend the other day who had seen you for a smile makeover, and she said that when you handed her a mirror once you were finished and she saw her beautiful new smile for the first time, she broke down and wept after being filled with joy and emotion. She can’t thank you enough, and she said that you have changed her life forever. My teeth are dark and yellow. They are really long and I have gaps between some and crookedness with others. When I was a teenager, I actually had someone tell me to my face that if I didn’t have such gross teeth, they’d love to date me, but they could never kiss me. I was depressed for days! I’m planning a trip to Little Rock the first of August and want to make your office a destination for consultation. Do you think that you might be able to fit me in your schedule to take a look at me and see if there’s hope for me too? I’d love to spend the rest of my life smiling a giant smile instead of hiding it all the time. BTW, the Extreme Makeover you did on Dateline NBC is awe inspiring!

A. Please call us ASAP and we will make every effort to see you during your stay in Little Rock. Your story in not all that uncommon. Millions of Baby Boomers spent formative years worried about the way their smiles looked. Many had no orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth... many had darkening of the enamel due to tetracycline antibiotic, and many had dental care but have teeth full of ugly and unattractive silver/ mercury amalgam fillings. Others damaged teeth is sports accidents before mouthpiece protection was made available. There’s no smile that can not be improved in my office. The benefits of a great smile are too many to talk about here, but I will enjoy discussing them in person soon. Thanks for sending the photos. I CAN give you the smile of your dreams.
