WILMA FRANCES AMMONS of Little Rock passed away far more quietly than anyone expected at noon on July 20. Wilma had dementia for about the last five years of her life. For four of those years, she was a contender for Most Outrageous Nursing Home Resident. Her last months, however, were peaceful and filled with beautiful visions. She didn’t even notice that she had end-stage lung cancer. Her family will be forever grateful for the tender and unfailing care she received from the staff of Arkansas Health Center in Benton, Ark.

Wilma was born September 23, 1933. She was so proud that she had five children. She married Finis D. “Tex” Harris in March 1950, when she was just 16. Denise arrived in September 1951. About a year later, Wilma made the mistake of complaining about her young husband to her daddy and quickly found herself divorced.

In August 1953, she wed James W. Felton, who was the father of Eddie, Danny, Paul, and Tanya. They were married for 28 years.

In May 1990, she married Joe L. Ammons, whom she adored, prayed with, tormented, kept secrets with, nagged, and joked with until his death on March 15, 2015.

Wilma was originally from Enid, Okla., the daughter of Edward F. and Velvia A. Chodrick Miller. She was the middle child of seven siblings, who scattered across the country in adulthood but tried to meet up at the parents’ house at least once a year with 25 kids in tow. All of the siblings had their daddy’s gift for storytelling. The five sisters were especially close friends. For several days of each visit, the sisters were inseparable, huddling to share a marathon of true-life tales. By day four or five, however, the diapers started to smell and nerves frayed; and the sisters’ squabbles were as legendary as their yarns. Until Wilma entered the nursing home, she still enjoyed calling one sister or another in the middle of the night for a big laugh or a good shouting match.

Wilma had much more creativity than money. In the 1960s, she produced meals for a family of seven on a budget of $20 per week. She had fabulous fashion sense, but she never, ever paid full price for a garment. She handcrafted Christmas gifts for every member of her family – including all 25 cousins – every year until her parents died. The only handicraft she never mastered was knitting. (No one knows why.) Once, she covered five large rainbow table centerpieces with thousands and thousands of sequins. Her children, whom she conscripted as slave labor for her projects, do not allow sequins in their houses to this day. She loved Jesus, vegetables, and flower gardens. She danced divinely. Her handwriting was elegant and microscopic. She demonstrated Avon and Home Interiors products, Sarah Coventry Jewelry, and various Cub Scout leaders’ trainings like a TV star. She could roller skate like a pro well into her 50s. And she would (and did) go toe-totoe with the Chairman of the Board of Education or the LRPD for her kids.

Wilma was particularly proud of her height, claiming at “fiveone-and-a half” to be the second-tallest sister. She subtracted so many years from her age and added so many to Denise’s that they were the same age for several decades. However, she got caught saying she was “nearly 80” when she was barely 70 because, she said, people were more impressed by her looks if they thought she was older. If you were ever Wilma’s friend, you were always Wilma’s friend. She kept up with people from her childhood in Enid and her teen years in Las Vegas as long as they lived. Her Christmas card list included dear ones from every season of her life – other newlywed housewives from North Little Rock, members of a Hillcrest bowling league from her 20s, Broadmoor church and PTA friends from her 30s, her coworkers at Sears and the Little Rock Street Department during her 40s and 50s, and other residents of the West Little Rock condos where she and Joe retired. Nothing thrilled her more than bumping into an old friend, and she seldom left the house without encountering someone she could greet with her enormous smile and some excellent gossip.

In addition to her parents and her sweetheart Joe, Wilma is now telling tall tales with siblings Wayne and Verdena Gallas, Zennon and Phyllis Miller, Dwaine and Mary Miller, Arley Woodford, and Glen and Rose Hensler. Left behind to make fun of Wilma’s cooking and to miss her every single day are her sisters Irene Woodford and Joy and Ed Stark; her children and their spouses Becky Felton, Beth Felton, and Rick Stillman; beloved stepchildren Michael and Lesley Ammons and Nancy Malheiro; grandchildren Rachel, Codie, Dane, David, Dayla, Nicole, Christian, Victoria, Olivia, Bobby, Sean, Aric, Britney, Chris, Zachery, Jacob, Mike, Meredith, and Joe; 14 great-grandchildren; and cousins, nieces, and nephews innumerable.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Lewy Body Dementia Association at https://www.lbda.org/donate. Online guest register www.SmithFamilyCares.com.

TOM ROGER FORD was born in Atlanta, Texas, to the late Tom Butler and Mable Jeanette Ford on July 27, 1939. He passed away on July 30, 2019, due to complications from chemotherapy.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Donna Knight Ford, two sons Tom Ed Ford of Hot Springs, Ark., and Roger Ford of Little Rock, one brother, Terry D. Ford of Houston, Texas. There is one grandson and one great-grandson. In addition there is a special cousin Betty Ford of Nacogdoches, Texas and other family and friends too numerous to mention.

In childhood Tom picked up the name Ronnie and it is what all of us who loved him called him. Ronnie left us on July 30, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. He passed away peacefully after being taken off the machines that were keeping him alive. He was 80 years old. The men of the family gathered around him and nurses gave drugs to make his transition virtually painless. His passing has left us all with a hole in our hearts that cannot be filled.

Like his father education was close to his heart. He held a Master of Science degree and even a Juris Doctor though he never took the bar exam. He taught in Pulaski County School and was a sales representative for Charles E. Merrill. He knew school people all over the state and was welcomed wherever he went.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, at 2 p.m. at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills, 7724 Landers Road, North Little Rock. To share a memory of Ronnie with his family visit www.griffinleggettresthills.com.

LAWRENCE PURIFOY HARPER, 84, of Little Rock, passed away Thursday, August 1st. He is survived by his wife Twilla Amo Harper, daughter Claire Kristen Hundley of Kentucky, daughter Star Harper Akel (Richard), of Little Rock and their three children, Courtney, Erica, and Isabella, son Samuel Purifoy Harper (Mary Beth), of Georgetown, Texas and their four children, Adam, Stephanie, Elizabeth, and Alex, son Eugene Eldridge Harper, of Hong Kong, and his daughter Irena Harper, brother Clio Armitage Harper (Carol) and sister Harriet Harper Hawkins (Leo) and host of nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Clio Armitage Harper, mother, Eleanore Purifoy Harper, and son Robert Lawrence Hundley.

Lawrence was a native of Little Rock and lived in the same neighborhood all of his life. He grew up roaming the heights with his friends, swimming, fishing and snake hunting in the creek across the street as well as playing tennis. Tennis was a lifelong love for Lawrence, a love he passed on to his kids. Even in his later years, he could be seen playing a mean game of cutthroat tennis with his buddies, Bob Anderson, Bart Roach, Peter Powell, Dorsey McRae, JD Simpson, Jay Rogers, and others. His drop shot was truly evil, and many fell victim to it.

Lawrence was a social man, known as LOLR, or Lawrence of Little Rock to his friends and family. He always had the latest news of friends and prided himself of being in the know. His social life was mostly found shopping at Kroger with his beloved dog Roxie. No matter who was in the store, he had a kind word, helpful hand, or a joke of the day. He passed no one without speaking and could stay for hours retrieving a simple jug of milk. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke-you listened.

Lawrence attended Exeter Academy and then Vanderbilt University. After Vanderbilt, he served in the US Army and reserves for 19+ years, reaching the level of Second Lieutenant. Returning home, he went to work for the family business Democrat Printing & Lithographing and made that his career for over 40 years. He loved the DPL crew like family.

He was compassionate about the written word, and wrote a bit himself. Some of his collaborations included works about Orville Faubus and Madam Maxine. His final work, “Duty, Honor, Country, my dad and the heroes next door” honors the war efforts of Arkansas men who fought in WWII.

One of Lawrence’s bravest acts was taking on three young children when he met the love of his life Twilla, who he was married to for 48 years. Lawrence took Star, Sam and Gene as his own. He carefully guided, loved and helped make them the people they are today. While Kristen and Robbie were not part of his day to day life, he loved them equally and fiercely. He is now reunited with Robbie.

Lawrence had a passion for history and travel. He was one of the first Americans allowed to travel behind the iron curtain during the cold war. While he was in the USSR, he strayed from the group and traveled the country until he was discovered by the KGB. They took him to the border and was told not to return.

Lawrence was a dedicated family man who loved his wife and children, he will be forever missed. The family wishes to thank Arkansas Hospice for their care. Funeral will be held at Christ Church, 509 Scott St., Little Rock on Wednesday August 7th at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Care of Arkansas, P.O. Box 7604, Little Rock, Ark. 72217-7604 or to the Arkansas Tennis Patrons Foundation, 1 Shackleford Dr., Suite 100, Little Rock, Ark. 72211.

NELDA EDMONDS BAKER closed her book of life peacefully on July 28, 2019. Nelda’s fondness for talking about her childhood is well-founded. Born in Anahuac, Texas on November 21, 1947, to Odean Busbea Edmonds and Jame H. (Bud) Edmonds, Nelda’s young years were spent on the family rice farm surrounded by aunt and uncles, cousins and friends. She was a daddy’s girl who was changed forever when he suddenly died in 1956.

Her mother moved her and her younger sister to Little Rock that same year and then to North Little Rock to be near maternal family and friends. Nelda attended Garland and Riverside Elementary Schools, Ridge Road Jr. High and finally North Little Rock High School.

The happiest years of her adult life were spent on a Phoenix, Arizona horse ranchette with her beloved husband Tom who preceded her in death.

Moving back to North Little Rock after Tom’s death, Nelda worked at Kroger until her retirement. She was an avid reader since a very young age. She also made beautiful dresses and crocheted pieces. Many remember Nelda for her love of a cold beer, a lighted cigarette and a good conversation that included a joke or two. Nelda’s love of animals was evident in her long list of adopted pets. Her cute dog Chewy died a few years ago, but her sweet cat Nosey Rosie survives her and is being re-homed.

In lieu of flowers, please raise a cold one to Nelda and if you can, please make a donation in her memory to the Pulaski County Humane Society, 14600 Colonel Glenn Road, Little Rock, Ark. 72210. CLARENDON — On Tuesday, July 30th, 2019, Marge E. Bateman, loyal wife and loving mother of three passed away at the age of 98.

Marge was born on February 22, 1921 in Clarendon, Arkansas to William E. Everett and Lena Park Everett. She graduated with honors from Clarendon High School and continued her education at the University of Arkansas where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She married William Walter Bateman in their hometown of Clarendon in 1942, where they both were lifelong residents. They reared two daughters, Sarah Beth and Brenda, and one son, Bill.

Marge had several passions which included painting, sketching, fishing, and in her youth tennis and horse-back riding. She often combined her love of the outdoors by painting the many song birds that visited the oak and pecan shaded yard of her home. She could often be found on mild days in the swing or rocker of her front porch, where she used her keen mind to solve the crossword puzzles of the day. She was a gracious hostess and entertained family and friends in this favorite part of her home.

She was a person who inspired all with her loving care for others; whether it was through her hugs, her words, or even just a smile. And that love she shared and gave to others was the core of who she was; to her, no act of kindness, however small, was ever wasted.

Marge was preceded in death by both parents, her husband and Sarah Short, her older sister. Marge is survived by her children, Sarah Beth Harris and her husband Maury Harris of Sardis, Mississippi, Bill Bateman and his wife Catherine Clarke Bateman of Memphis, Tennessee, and Brenda Catlett and her husband Mike Catlett of Blytheville, Arkansas. In addition she is survived by eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

A private memorial service for family members will be held Saturday, August 3rd, 2019 at 10 a.m. in the Bateman Cemetery with Reverend Nan Nelson officiating. The family will enjoy receiving friends at a visitation held the same day in Clarendon at the United Methodist Church Wesleyan Hall from 1-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.
