Dr. MAY L. GRIEBEL, age 70, left the world a dimmer place when she passed away September 14th at her home in Little Rock. May was born in Clarksburgh, West Virginia to Guy and Mary Bradley.

An avid lover of wildflowers and nature, her native West Virginia never strayed far from her thoughts despite her proclivity to travel.

May graduated from The Ohio State University in 1971 with a BS in Occupational Therapy. This degree was followed by a Masters of Education at the University of Central Arkansas, and she then taught occupational therapy until ultimately deciding to become a physician. As she did with all things, she tackled medical school with intense enthusiasm, and graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1983 with top honors. Medical school was followed by a residency in Pediatrics at her beloved Arkansas Children’s Hospital. She briefly left Children’s Hospital in 1986 to complete a fellowship in Neurology, with a focus in Child Neurology, Sleep and Epilepsy at Duke University. She then returned to Arkansas Children’s Hospital to continue a career in Child Neurology. It was there that May helped develop a sleep and epilepsy monitoring center. May’s primary drive in life was to take exceptional care of children and their families. The commitment she had to her patients and their families was known to all who worked with her. Her dedication to her patients, trainees, and colleagues was formally recognized in 2012 when she became the recipient of the Ruth Olive Beall Award, granted by the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Department of Pediatrics.

She became a mother at age 38, and relished the experience of raising her daughter, secure in the love and support of her husband. Her husband and daughter, and family as a whole, were among the greatest joys in her life.

May had a deep love of travel, which began in 1966, with a six week long European tour with the School Band of America. She later spent a year studying in Leicester, England under the auspices of Rotary International. She traveled widely throughout her lifetime, and some of her most cherished destinations included family vacations spent on Sanibel Island, at a ranch called Rawah in Colorado, and a picturesque journey through New Zealand.

Though her physical limitations at times hindered her fervor for community involvement, she was an avid supporter of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, sang joyfully with the Happiness singers, and was a beloved member of the Second Presbyterian Church. She was an elder in the church, and some of her most treasured memories were from times spent singing and traveling with the church choir. In addition, she was a voracious reader, and enthusiastic member of the Traveling Companions Book Club. She also enjoyed writing and participating in the Tales of the South project, and was a strong patron of the arts in her community.

Surviving her are husband Jack A. Griebel Jr., amazing daughter, Lauren Griebel (Paul MacCammond), brother, Guy Bradley (Diane), nephews Chris, Keith, and Kevin Bradley and nieces, Greer and Meredith Griebel. a multitude of friends, and her devoted Egyptian Mao cat, Cleo.

May was a devoted wife, mother and physician. Her indomitable character, quick wit, laughter and joyful spirit will be missed by her family and all those that knew her. “You were more than a wife, you were my best friend, my colleague, my morning star, my soul mate.”

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2019, at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, followed by a reception.
