BIG HOUSE CALL

HOBBLED MICHIGAN HOPING TO HAND IOWA ITS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON

-

Keys for Iowa

Rely on defense: The Hawkeyes have bullied opponents in three of their first four games, though they haven’t played anyone of note except perhaps Iowa State. So even though the Iowa schedule hasn’t been particularly stout, its defensive statistics have been. The Hawkeyes are yielding an average of just nine points per game and rank fifth in the nation in total defense, allowing only 251.3 yards per game.

Control the line of scrimmage: In Iowa’s most recent game, a 48-3 rout of Middle Tennessee State, the Hawkeyes dominated the trenches and relied on the strength of their offensive line to overpower the Blue Raiders. The front seven created huge seams, allowing Iowa to run for 351 yards. Toren Young racked up 131 yards, Tyler Goodson added 97 and starter Mekhi Sargent, who didn’t get a touch in the second half, ran for 91.

Keys for Michigan

Overcome injuries: The Wolverines likely will be missing some key players due to injuries. Backup quarterback Dylan McCaffrey suffered a concussion at Wisconsin two weeks ago and is doubtful against Iowa. Starting tight end Sean McKeon is still nursing an injury sustained on a third-quarter touchdown catch against Wisconsin and hopes to return. Middle linebacker Josh Ross also was injured in the Wisconsin game and did not play last week against Rutgers.

Run a smoother spread: Michigan’s new spread offense has had its glitches this season but appeared much more polished against the Scarlet Knights. Shea Patterson threw one interception, but his pocket presence was improved, and his confidence undoubtedly swelled following the win. Patterson ran for three TDs and threw for one more to propel an offense that might finally be finding its footing.

Prediction

Iowa 24, Michigan 17. This looks to be a must-win for the Wolverines, who should have a slight advantage playing at home. The Hawkeyes, who are allowing just 77 rushing yards per game, likely will try to force Patterson to win the game. If Iowa’s defense can contain Patterson and keep the ball in quarterback Nate Stanley’s capable hands, the trio of running backs could give Michigan’s defense fits.
