VIRGINIA LORENE HEARNE, 90, of Sherwood was called home on October 4, 2019. She was born September 14, 1929 to the late Joseph Eugene and Nellie Pearl (Stell) Johnson in Decatur, Alabama. Her family moved to Arkansas when she was still an infant.

She attended Princeton High School, in Dallas County, Arkansas where she found her love for basketball and was an All State player. She graduated in 1947, and married Judson A. Hearne on June 22, 1947. In 1967 she began working at Arkansas Children’s Colony in Alexander, where she worked with disabled children. In 1982 she graduated from Arkansas Beauty College. However, her greatest accomplish­ments were her children, grandchild­ren, and great grandchild­ren.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Judson; two sisters Laura Green and Gertrude Spann; and two brothers Earl and Eddie Murrah.

She is survived by her children Janelle Bowie (Mike) and Larry “Dustin” Hearne (Beverly); five grandchild­ren, Julie Shelby (Brent), Courtney Robbins, Gregory Dustin Hearne (April), Kelly Nicole Hearne, Drew Owen Hearne (Whitney), seven great — grandchild­ren; sisters Murle Pennington, Dorothy Reed and brother James Murrah and Dewayne Murrah.

ROBERT “BOB” JAMES LANEY, 75, of Sherwood, passed away October 3, 2019. He was born November 14, 1943 in Fayettevil­le, Arkansas to the late Everett and Lorene Tuttle Laney. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by two sisters, Patsy Tull, Diana Sue Stephens and his half-brother, Tommy Laney.

CORA MAE LOWE, 89, of Little Rock, departed this life on Thursday, October 3, 2019. She was the widow of Finis Lowe, Sr. Her survivors are her children: Barbara (Sylvester) Stewart, Johnny (Daphne) Lowe and Vanessa Lowe.

THOMAS JOSEPH LYNCH of Little Rock, Arkansas, left this Earth on October 4, 2019, at the age of 75. Tom was born in Portage, Pennsylvan­ia, on May 14, 1944. He attended Lock Haven State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. He then attended the University of Houston, where he earned an MS and PhD in microbiolo­gy and met his future wife, Deborah Jared. The couple married on July 24, 1971, at the University of Houston. Tom was a devoted husband, father, brother, son, friend, and teacher.

Tom was known for his love of the sciences and education. He was a Cancer Research Fellow in the Department of Biochemist­ry at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital from 1972 until 1978. He then began his career as a professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and later served as associate dean in the College of Math and Science for 14 years. In 1995, he won the University Teaching Award. Additional­ly, Tom was a 51-year member of the American Society for Microbiolo­gy and a 43year member of the American Chemical Society. He served on the board for the Arkansas AIDS Foundation­s in the early 1990s and was president of the board in 1995.

Tom was known for many things beyond his profession­al accolades. He had a strong love of fishing, camping, and all things outdoors. He also considered himself an “amateur chef.” He was known for cooking fourcourse meals for his family and friends, along with his famous breads and cakes! Tom also continuous­ly kept a garden at his home, where he grew potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and various herbs. He will forever be known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He worked to instill in his daughters to love learning, to be fair, and to love and respect others.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Jared Lynch; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marcellus Celestine Lynch; and brothers-in-law, Donald Jared and Ray Ward. Tom is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Lynch Cauley (Patrick) and Erin Lynch Mason (Drew); grandchild­ren, Aidan Cauley, Emma Cauley, Jared Lynch Burchfield, and Chase Mason; brothers, Michael Lynch and Barry Lynch; sisters, Judy Welu (Bill) and Nan Ward; brothers-in-law, Leonard Jared and Dennis Jared; sister-in-law, Jody Jared Black; and significan­t other, Melissa.

A visitation with the family will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. October 9, 2019, at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 p.m. October 10, 2019, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Little Rock.

–––––❖––––– ALITA MANTELS (31 October 1950 - 23 September 2019) was born in St. Louis (Missouri) but spent much of her youth on the farms of her grandparen­ts (Will Hall and Elizabeth Ilon Leslie Hall near Damascus, Arkansas; Ernest Mantels and Mary Virginia Beasley Mantels near St. Clair, Missouri).

She participat­ed in a uniquely demanding K-12 honors program within the St. Louis public schools and graduated (1968) from Grover Cleveland High School as a National Merit Scholar. Her father (Charles Ernst Mantels, Sr.) earned a Bronze Star for his World War II service in the Pacific with the U.S. Army and later worked in the U.S. Postal Service; his membership in the National Letter Carriers Associatio­n made his only daughter eligible for that organizati­on’s sole national scholarshi­p, which helped finance her education (1968-1972) at Hendrix College (Conway, Arkansas), from which she graduated with high honors.

With multiple majors and areas of certificat­ion, she taught in several Arkansas public high schools from 1972 until her retirement in 2010; the last 35 years of her teaching career were spent on the faculty of Little Rock’s Hall High School, where she taught various levels/ courses of ACT Prep, English, French, Spanish, and Stage Crew. (During those four decades she also served in many leadership roles related to textbook adoption, curriculum developmen­t, standardiz­ed testing, 504 accommodat­ions/coordinati­on, commenceme­nt exercises, co-curricular/extra curricular student activities, and the Parent Teacher Student Associatio­n.)

After graduating high school she spent all her summers working (in both the private and public sector) or traveling (solo or as a tour leader for groups of 3-6 high school students) in Europe, North America, and Latin America. Throughout her adult life she supported public education, the arts, civil/human rights, and the environmen­t.

MARY J. “JUDY” PFLUGHAUPT, age 77, went to be with her Lord on October 3, 2019. She was born in Clarksdale, Mississipp­i to the late Charles and Polly Gillock. A graduate of Mississipp­i State College for Women, Judy had a career in teaching and retired from the Little Rock School District. She enjoyed travel, reading, and serving her Lord.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Gary; son, Steven Pflughaupt, of Centerton, Arkansas; daughter, Jill Hillyard, of Sherwood, Arkansas; and four grandchild­ren and three great-grandchild­ren. Judy is also survived by her sister, Sarah Murphee, of Starksvill­e, Mississipp­i, and her brother, Charles Gillock, of Memphis, Tennessee. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Martha “Sue” Wells.

THOMAS JACK SAVARY, 89, of Little Rock, passed away on October 2, 2019. He was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church. He is survived by his daughters: Kathy Davidson, Linda (Henry) Edwards, Patricia Savary, Janie (Jason) Hart, and Rachel (Beau) Blankenshi­p; seven grandchild­ren: Charlotte Davidson, Shelby Davidson, Casey Knight, David Edwards, Grace Edwards, Jacob Hart, and Sydney Blankenshi­p; sisters: Mary Jane Grimaldi and Evedna Duran, and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Evedna Savary; his son, David Savary; his son-in-law, Steve Davidson; his brother, Rev. Richard Savary; and his ex-wife, Mary Ann Savary. He served in the U.S. Army, and he graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in accounting. He retired from All Steel Constructi­on in 1995. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfathe­r. He was a dedicated fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks and loved watching Hog football, basketball, and baseball.
