Season opener for Winds; violinist sets 3 recitals

The Little Rock Winds and conductor Israel Getzov open their 2019-20 season with a concert titled “Melody and Passion,” 7:30 p.m. today at Second Presbyteri­an Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock. Cellist Stephen Feldman solos in Tramonto: Romanza for Cello by Luis Serrano Alarcon. The program also includes Eric Whitacre’s Seal Lullaby, John Barnes Chance’s Incantatio­n and Dance, selections from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and the finale from Dmitri Shostakovi­ch’s Symphony No. 5. Famous fiddlers

Arkansas Symphony co-concertmas­ter Kiril Laskarov and pianist Carl Anthony will play a program of music composed for famous violinists:

The program for all three recitals: Praeludium and Allegro by Fritz Kreisler, which Kreisler attributed to Gaetano Pugnani; Introducti­on and Rondo Capriccios­o by Camille Saint-Saens, dedicated to Pablo de Sarasate; the theme from Ladies in Lavender by Nigel Hess, dedicated to Joshua Bell; Tango “Por Una Cabeza” by John Williams, dedicated to Itzhak Perlman; and the finale from the Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius, dedicated to Franz von Vecsey. At Trinity Cathedral, Laskarov and soprano Stephanie Smittle will also perform Gustav Holst’s Four Songs for Voice and Violin.

TODAY Prom production

The Studio Theatre, 320 W. Seventh St., Little Rock, stages The Awesome 80s Prom, 7:30 p.m. today-Saturday. The setting for the one-act play, by Ken Davenport & The Class of ’89, is a 1989 high-school prom, populated by characters from ’80s movies, all competing for Prom King and Queen. Core Dance, a contempora­ry dance organizati­on based in Houston and Atlanta/ Decatur, Ga., will give three performanc­es as part of “The Empathy Project,” a six-day residency today-Tuesday at the University of Central Arkansas, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway:

A 5-7:30 p.m. Second Friday Art Night reception opens exhibits of angel images by painter and sculptor Jane F. Hankins and works by clients of the Jericho Way Day Resource Center in the Parish House’s Gallery and the Parlor, respective­ly, of Christ Episcopal Church, 509 Scott St., Little Rock. Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. The 2019 “Arkansas Women to Watch: Heavy Metal” touring exhibit, wrapping up an eight-venue statewide tour, opens with a 5-8 p.m. reception Friday in the 2nd Floor Gallery at the William F.
