Little Rock, Arkansas – November 20, 2019 – Dr. Mary L. Good’s death at age 88 in Little Rock, Arkansas, ends her unmatched career and leaves behind an award-winning legacy in science, academia, industry and governmental leadership.

Dr. Mary Lowe Good has died peacefully at her home at age 88 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She leaves behind an unmatched career of passionate work in academia, industrial research and government.

She was born in Grapevine, Texas on June 20, 1931. Her parents, John Willace Lowe and Winnie Mercer Lowe, were country school teachers. She spent the early part of her life in central and south-west Texas. The family moved to Kirby, Arkansas when she was in junior high school; later moving to Willisville, where she completed high school. She went to college at Arkansas State Teacher’s College (now University of Central Arkansas), and graduate school at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, completing her doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry at age 24.

She began her career at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge; later becoming part of the founding faculty of LSUNO (now University of New Orleans). She was the second faculty member of UNO to receive the distinction of being designated Boyd Professor. Later she moved on to serve as the dean of the School of Engineering at LSUBR for two years prior to accepting a management position at Universal Oil Products in Chicago, and then moved on to AlliedSignal, Inc. in Morristown, N.J., as their senior vice president for technology. While vice president and director of research for the Engineered Materials Research division at the Signal Research Center (later Allied-Signal), she oversaw the major project of determining whether the emerging technology of the Global Positioning System (GPS) had an application for the general public. Its widespread use today is due in part to her leadership role at this crucial stage.

The 143,000-member American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) elected Dr. Good in 2001 to serve as the organization’s President. In 2004, Dr. Good was recipient of the National Science Foundation’s highest honor, the Vannevar Bush Award. ANNE SHELTON PARKER passed away peacefully on November 22, at the age of 76. Anne was preceded in death by her parents, Helen Louise Shelton Parker and William “Bill” Elliotte Parker, and her youngest sister, Jan Louise Parker West. She is survived by her adoring children, Adam Ritchey (Amy) of Fayetteville and Joy Ritchey Reynolds (John) of Vilonia, her beloved grandson, Jackson Ritchey of Fayetteville, and two devoted sisters Peggy Darouse (Dick) of Mountain Home and Joyce Whitfield of Hot Springs. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, one step-grand-dog, and a host of loving friends.

A humble woman, Anne would never brag or boast of her accomplishments. Her family is happy to take this opportunity to do so on her behalf. Born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Anne was a daddy’s girl. The firstborn of four, she became a doting older sister to Peg, Joyce, and Jan. She was a gifted student, a hard worker, and a proud cheerleader for the Jonesboro High School Hurricanes. The cheer line practiced for years in the side yard of the Parker home on West Nettleton in Jonesboro. Together with her family, she enjoyed hosting spaghetti dinners before games.

While attending college at Arkansas State University, Anne served in just about every elected leadership position in the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, culminating in a year as president. In 1965, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. In 1968, Anne received a Master of Arts in English from the University of Kentucky. During her time in academia, Anne taught classes at Arkansas State, the University of Kentucky, LSU and Auburn University.

After moving to Little Rock in 1976, Anne joined the second-ever class of students at UALR’s Bowen School of Law. She graduated first in her class, receiving her Juris Doctorate with High Honors in 1979. Immediately following law school, Anne began a prestigious position as a clerk for Judge Richard S. Arnold in his joint appointment to the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of the State of Arkansas. She continued to clerk for Judge Arnold after his elevation to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in 1980. Throughout her career, she would proudly display a letter from Judge Arnold in which he praised a brief she wrote as the best brief he had ever read.

Upon completion of her clerkship in 1981, Anne became an associate attorney at the Mitchell Law Firm. On January 1, 1985, Anne was one of the first three women to become partners in the Mitchell Firm.

A member of the Arkansas Bar Association and the National Association of Bond Lawyers, Anne had a distinguished law career and her work continues to have a significant impact. She was vital to such projects as the initial revitalization of Main Street in downtown Little Rock, the construction of the Frito Lay plant in Jonesboro, which today employs almost 800 Arkansans, and the Arkansas Development and Finance Authority’s (ADFA) bond guaranty program, which continues to benefit small and medium-sized communities, and thousands of individuals, throughout the state. In 2006, the ADFA Bond Guaranty Program was judged by the Council of Development Finance Agencies as the best economic development bond financing program in America, beating out California, Massachusetts, and Minnesota, in large part thanks to her work. Anne was also counsel on large prison, educational, and governmental transactions throughout the state.

Arkansas Business named Anne as one of the top 100 Women in Arkansas in 1996, the inaugural year of that award. She was chosen again in 1998 and 1999. She served on the Federal Advisory Committee, 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals from 1993 to 1997. Ranked by Chambers USA as a top lawyer in the Corporate/Municipal Bonds in 2015 and 2018, she also ranked as a Senior Statesman in Corporate/ Commercial Municipal Bonds in Arkansas in 2017.

Outside of her professional life, Anne was an engaged community leader. She served as the president of the board of Advocates for Battered Women (now known as Women & Children First). She also served on the Arkansas Repertory Theater board of directors as well as volunteering countless hours at the Stewpot. Anne was a graduate of Leadership Greater Little Rock and was a devoted member of the Second Presbyterian Church for over 40 years.

Anne did all of these things despite suffering several great personal tragedies, including the untimely deaths of her father and youngest sister. She had a great strength of character and she never gave up. She pulled herself together, went to work, and made a wonderful life for herself and her children.

Her children are especially grateful to her devoted sisters and to her loving friends from the Mitchell Firm who helped care for Anne and supported her family in the last months of her life. They are also grateful she never knew a day without a hard copy of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette — she would not have survived the conversion to iPad.

Anne was elegant, reserved, and uniquely intelligent. She had immaculate taste and was a skilled giver of gifts. She was a proud grandmother who told everyone she met what a fine young man her grandson Jackson had become. Anne was a voracious reader of mysteries, often reading a paperback novel per week. She converted a spare bedroom in her house into a library in the 80s, which even today houses thousands of books. She loved cheeseburgers from Cheers, turkey salad from Burge’s, and dinner with her dear friends Jean and Joyce. Most of all, Anne loved her children. Adam and Joy already miss her wise counsel, her fierce support of her family, and her charming sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held Monday, December 2, at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock, Ark. with Pastor Stephen Hancock officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of Anne’s favorite organizations — the Second Presbyterian Church Pastor’s Discretionary Fund, Women and Children First, or the Arkansas Repertory Theater.

Arrangements are being handled by Ruebel Funeral Home. www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

SHELBA JEAN GREENE, age 81, of Jacksonville, Arkansas passed away, Sunday, November 17, 2019. She was born December 22, 1937 in Rose Creek near Petit Jean Mountain, a daughter of Hershel and Ruby Robinson. She was a graduate of Casa High School. She met her future husband, James Greene, while attending Draughn’s Business School in Little Rock, from which she graduated in 1956.

Jean was always active in her local church, especially in women’s ministries. The organizational skills she honed in business school were used in developing handbooks for future ministry. She served as Chaplain and then President of the 60,000 member Auxiliary of the Gideons’ International, elected by the membership. During her tenure as President, she traveled and spoke at International Conferences both in and out of the USA.

Jim and Jean were partners in every way. They started several businesses including furniture, manufacturing, real estate, and insurance. The insurance business grew to work in nine states with over 50 employees, including several family members. Jim always acknowledged Jean’s part in the success of the businesses.

Jean enjoyed traveling, seeing the many wonders of God’s creation. She particularly enjoyed Kenya, Singapore, the Holy Land, Austria, Russia and Western Canada. In all her travels, she visited six of the seven continents.

For all her accomplishments, she was the most proud of and concerned for her children and grandchildren. She prayed daily that their faith would grow, sustaining their lives as it did hers. Her family was her greatest pride and joy. Being a wife and mother was always her aspiration and she excelled at it.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, James Greene of Jacksonville; children, LaJuana (Ed) Oswalt of Sherwood; Matthew (Debbie) Greene of Ft. Worth, Texas; ReNata (Keith) Bauder of Lorton, Virginia; DeAwna (Jeff) Brantly of Little Rock; sister, Jan (Johnny) Rainey of Casa; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

CHARLESTON — Maymie Alice Rainwater was born on August 31, 1919 (yes that is correct, she was 100 years old!) and died on November 17, 2019. She was the only child to Arthur and Mary Smith. She was married to Dugan Rainwater for 27 years and had three children, Arthur Leroy Rainwater, Mary Emme Lensing, and Mary Jo Long. She had five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, plus all of her bonus Verkamp children. Needless to say she was loved by many.

Maymie was a jack of all trades — she drove an ambulance at 13, helped in the OR with Dr. Bollinger at 17, and she went to floral school in Dallas and made many, many bows for her beloved community of Charleston. Maymie and her family moved to Jacksonville, Ark., in 1959 where she continued in the floral business with R&R Florist for many years. She eventually went to work at the Jacksonville Newspaper as their bookkeeper, anyone who knows her well, knows she balanced her checkbook to the penny no matter how long it took. She ended her jack of all trades career selling infant clothing at JC Penny department store. Maymie’s most cherished and favorite occupation however was that of grandmother. She was the most amazing grandmother and friend any child could have ever wanted. She never missed a football game, graduation, or opportunity to play kings in the corner with her grandchildren. She moved back home in 1992. She wanted to be with the people she grew up with, the ones she loved and who loved her.

Maymie was an amazing, rebellious, ornery, independent loving woman. She lived to tell stories, give kisses, and yell I Love You. Every afternoon she could be found in her chair either eating ice cream or having her beloved martini. If she ever taught you the correct way to make her martini consider yourself lucky and loved.

Maymie lived independently until the bitter end. This great feat was made possible by the family that loved her. We want to thank the Verkamp’s, and Patricia Dutrich for loving and caring for her all these years. You are truly a blessing. She loved this community, considered everyone one of her angels, and she loved being the center of attention. So please come visit her one more time and be part of the party and give her the attention we all know she cherished.

Visitation will be held at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2019, with Rosary to follow at 6:30 p.m., Smith Mortuary, Charleston. Funeral Mass will 11 a.m. Thursday, November 21, 2019 at Sacred Heart Church in Charleston, under the direction of Smith Mortuary.
