HEBER SPRINGS — Margueritt­e Elizabeth Edwards Monk

passed this Earth to join her heavenly father on January 25, 2020 at the age of 97 years. She had been a resident of Heber Springs, Arkansas since June 1959. Margueritt­e was born April 9, 1922 in Monticello, Arkansas to John Benjamin and Gertrude Borchadt Edwards. She graduated Valedictor­ian from Monticello High School in 1940. She attended A&M College on scholarshi­p and earned her teaching certificat­e. Miss Edwards taught at Monticello Elementary School 1st and 2nd grades under the guidance of Miss Dolph McClain and Miss Bernice Carmichael. While teaching she also attended business school at night. She left teaching and worked for Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company until February 17, 1945 when she married James Thomas Monk of Cabot, Arkansas. They lived in Cabot, Little Rock, North Little Rock, Searcy and Batesville before moving to Heber Springs. In 1959 they opened the Butcher Boy grocery store and joined First United Methodist Church. Margueritt­e Monk worked many years from 1982 in the Browsing Post for Sharon Van Horn, Margaret Griffin and Debbie Park. Margueritt­e was an avid Bridge player and a strong Bible study student.

Margueritt­e was preceded in death by both her parents, her sister Louise Cooper and her husband, her brother Ben Edwards and his two wives, her husband of 59 years, her mother/father-in-law, Thomas B. and Maybelle Monk, her brother/sister-in-law, Robert and Billie Sue Monk, her sister/ brother-in-law, Merrill and Patsy Marshall, and her daughter-in-law, Becky Monk. Four children survive Margueritt­e Monk, two sons: Jerry T. and Fred W. Monk (Jeedee), two daughters: Peggy Stroud all of Heber Springs and Susan McConnell (Rick) of Clifton Park, N.Y. Four grandsons, Brent Monk, Brad (Samantha) Monk and Jeremy Monk and Cole Elrod, one great-granddaugh­ter, Lea Rebekah Monk, two great-grandsons: Graham Thomas Monk and Pace Bradley Monk, also other relatives and many friends.

A private burial will be attended by family only and a Celebratio­n of Life Service will be on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 11 a.m. in First United Methodist Church of Heber Springs by Rev. Tommy Toombs.
