SWAC WOMEN TEXAS SOUTHERN 78, UAPB 77

The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff women’s basketball team erased a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter only to lose in the final seconds to Texas Southern, the Southweste­rn Athletic Conference leader, on Monday night in Houston.

After falling behind 65-49 with 9:50 remaining, UAPB (3-14, 2-5 SWAC) went on a 19-4 run to pull within 6968 on Trasity Totten’s jumper with 3:45 remaining.

Texas Southern scored the next five points, but a 9-2 surge saw UAPB take its first lead of the game on Totten’s three-pointer off of an assist by Jayla Atmore with 13 seconds left at 77-76. Seven seconds later, Niya Mitchell’s layup put Texas Southern (11-7, 6-1) in the lead for good.

Kyeonia Harris lead UAPB with 20 points. Noe’ll Taylor and Totten each contribute­d 14 points, and Atmore chipped in with 11. Nissa Sam-Grant led the Golden Lions with 12 rebounds.

UAPB made 25 of 70 shots (35.7%) and outrebound­ed Texas Southern 5045.

Clani Cryor led all scorers with 21 points for Texas Southern, which made 26 of 68 shots (38.2%).

SWAC MEN

TEXAS SOUTHERN 68, UAPB 57

After hanging with a conference co-leader for 25 minutes, the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-16, 2-5 SWAC) failed to keep up with Texas Southern in the second half in Houston.

The Golden Lions held the biggest lead of the first half at 9-4, then settled into a back-and-forth game until intermissi­on.

Terrance Banyard’s free throw gave UAPB a 32-31 edge with seven seconds left in the half, but Tyrik Armstrong’s layup beat the buzzer as Texas Southern (9-11, 6-1) led 33-32 at halftime.

UAPB retook the lead at 39-37 on Marquell Carter’s three-pointer with 15:26 remaining, but the Tigers embarked on a 14-3 run that was capped by Armstrong’s free throws for a 51-42 advantage with 8:12 remaining. UAPB would draw no closer than four the rest of the way.

Carter led the way for UAPB with 18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Dequan Morris added 13 points. Eden Ewing scored 18 points for Texas Southern, and Yahuza Rasas had 17 points and 16 rebounds.
