■ On any given day last semester, at least five truant students were forced to abandon their plans for a school-free day when they were picked up and taken to the Little Rock School District’s Truancy Reduction Center. According to a report to the Little Rock School Board on Thursday night, 424 children and teen-agers passed through the truancy center on 21st Street near Booker Magnet Elementary School during the first semester. The report to the school board doesn’t count all truants, just those spotted by police or reported by citizens. The numbers don’t necessarily include students with excessive unexcused absences. Most of the students counted in the report were delivered to the center by police. Once there, students met with volunteers who would talk to them to determine their schools and why they were out. Parents were called, and most of the students were taken to their schools by bus.

■ A backup hard drive containing the personal information of hundreds of Arkansas National Guard soldiers is missing, putting soldiers in two 39th Infantry Brigade battalions at risk of having their identities stolen. Capt. Chris Heathscott, spokesman for the Arkansas National Guard, said that a soldier reported Tuesday that the drive was missing. The soldier, who keeps identification rosters as part of his job, hadn’t used the drive since November and discovered it missing when looking for it on Feb.

15. The drive was used as a backup system, holding soldier rosters with names, Social Security numbers and other personal information that could be used in identity theft.
