MICHAEL EDWARD WINSTON

-

of Little Rock and Jasper, Ark. passed away on February 6, 2020, in Malvern, Ark. at the age of 77.

Born in Tulsa, Okla. to Edward and Margaret (Ockerman) Winston of Jenks, Okla., Michael spent his youth working the family farm. As a boy, he was an avid member of the 4H Society and even reared a prize-winning hog at the Tulsa County Fair in 1954. Michael graduated from Glenpool High School in 1960.

After earning a B.S. from Northeastern Oklahoma State College (now Northeastern State University) in Tahlequah, Okla., Michael received his M.S. (1966) and PhD. (1974) in Audiology from Kansas University.

In his distinguished career as a clinician and educator, Michael served as Director of Audiology at the Ear & NoseThroat Clinic in Little Rock and at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. In addition, he served as President of the Arkansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 1977 and was an adjunct faculty member at UCA and UALR for many years. In support of his children’s athletic interests, Michael was a founding member of the Riverdale Soccer Club (now Arkansas United), was one of the first Presidents of the Arkansas State Soccer Association, and served on the Little Rock Gymnastics Booster Club. He was himself an active soccer referee, and for many years was a fixture in black at local youth and adult games. As a referee, Michael prided himself on his knowledge of the rules of the game and his dedication to sportsmanship. In retirement, Michael loved riding his Kubota tractor and relaxing in front of a roaring fire.

Michael’s zest for life and his love of puns and all forms of creative silliness will be missed by his surviving family: wife, Jane (Trimble) Winston, children Michael Andrew (Barrett) Winston (Chicago, IL), Amy (Sherry) Winston (Riverside, Ill.), Ann Winston (Malvern, Ark.), and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his two younger brothers, Jon Winston (Oklahoma City, Okla.), and Tighe (Karen) Winston (Tigard, Oregon). Michael was predeceased by both of his parents.

Memorial services for Michael will be announced at a later date. Cremation Arrangements Entrusted to Arkansas Cremation. www.ArkansasCremation.com.
