Solution to stray dogs

-

Homeless dogs have become a familiar problem to Little Rock in recent years as there are not enough shelters to be able to take care of the abundant amount of dogs on the street.

As the number of stray dogs has increased, people have begun to look at solutions to try to minimize the time and money being spent on this issue. Requiring spay and neuter laws, partnering with other humane shelters in the area, as well as encouraging people to adopt older dogs have been identified as effective solutions.

I believe that the best solution to this issue is to set some sort of spay and neuter guidelines. This solution is important as it lowers the number of tax dollars spent on euthanizing stray dogs that humane shelters are not able to support, along with reducing the number of strays on the streets. It is also important as the South has the worst spay and neuter laws and still has a lot of improving to do on them.

Another solution that I think would be beneficial to the city of Little Rock would be to partner with other humane society/animal services departments to allow for more positive outcomes in the future. This solution would battle the root of the problem by bringing in the dogs. Another correlated issue is that it is difficult for many families to safely surrender their dogs to shelters as they do not have space or resources for these dogs, so they have to take extreme measures such as putting their dogs out on the streets. Simplifying the process of giving up dogs at humane shelters will allow the number of strays to go down.
