100 YEARS AGO March 31, 1920

A. B. Banks of Fordyce was elected president of the Southern Trust Company to succeed the late J. R. Vinson, and J. H. Stanley, trust officer, was elected vice president, at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the bank yesterday. Mr. Banks was born in Little Rock in 1868. His birthplace was on the corner of Main and Third streets. He began his business career as a country school teacher in Drew county. Later he became interested in banking and insurance, building up his interests until he became one of the most influentia­l business men in the state.

50 YEARS AGO March 31, 1970

The Arkansas State Police is asking doctors to help identify unsafe and dangerous drivers and has sent about 5,000 questionna­ire postcards to the Arkansas Medical Society for distributi­on to the physicians. The postcards were distribute­d with a note from the Medical Society. It said, “Dear Doctor: The enclosed ‘Concerned Citizen Post Card’ is forwarded at the request of the Arkansas State Police. Any questions concerning these postcards should be directed to the State Police.” The card has a space for the name of the person suspected of being a problem driver and a check space to mark the related driving problem.

25 YEARS AGO March 31, 1995

JONESBORO — President Clinton is to deliver the keynote address at the dedication of an $11 million library expansion Monday morning at Arkansas State University. Eugene Smith, interim president of the university, said he received verificati­on Thursday that Clinton will attend the event. The president is spending the weekend in Arkansas and is to arrive in Little Rock tonight. “We are certainly delighted he can find time to be here,” Smith said. “It will be the third major building on the campus that he has participat­ed in the dedication of.” The other two buildings were dedicated while Clinton was governor.

The Little Rock School Board voted unanimousl­y Tuesday to adopt a strategic plan of operation that includes what its authors called “ambitious, eye-popping” goals for student achievemen­t and strategies to achieve the goals over the next five years. The aim of the plan — called “Target 2015: A Performanc­e Work Plan for the Little Rock School District” — is to have virtually every student reading at grade level by the end of third grade, taking a rigorous course of studies in middle and high school, and being prepared for college or a high-wage job.
