STUTTGART — John Albert “Johnny” Leder,

94, of Stuttgart passed away Saturday, April 11, 2020, at his home. Mr. Leder was born Jan. 10, 1926, in Stuttgart to A.C. Leder Sr. and Emelia Scheiderer Leder.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and served in the Pacific on an amphibian attack ship. He drove a landing craft and made landings on Iwo Jima Feb. 19, 1945, and then on April 1, 1945, Easter Sunday morning, he made landing on Okinawa. He also made landing on Luzon in the Philippine­s.

Then after Japan surrendere­d he made landings on the beach at Wakayama, Japan, and then made several trips bringing troops back to the U.S. from Japan and the Philippine­s.

He retired April 1, 1989 from Case IH after 43 years. He enjoyed hunting and gardening. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting, and oil painting, mostly wildlife and landscape. He was a member of Ulm Hunting Club since 1943. While a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mr. Leder held most of the offices in the church. In 2013, he transferre­d his membership to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stuttgart.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Imogene Berryman Leder; four brothers, A.C. Leder Jr., Harry Leder, Howard Leder and Lester Leder; four sisters, Margaret Leder, Vernice Mason, Francis Hinson and June Leder; and a niece, Shirley Stone who was more like a sister.

Survivors are his wife, Maxine H. Leder; step-sons, Scotty Diffee and Terry Diffee; and many nieces and nephews.

Due to the coronaviru­s pandemic, the services, which are 2 p.m., Tuesday at Lone Tree Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home, are limited to immediate family members only in the interest of public safety.

It was Mr. Leder’s wishes that memorials be made to Ulm Cemetery, St. John’s Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice.
