■ Annie Lee, a lieutenant colonel in the Mississipp­i National Guard, became the first woman to lead a battalion in the 70-year history of the 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team when she took command of the 106th Brigade Support Battalion, based in Hattiesbur­g.

■ Steven Brannon, the mayor of Fairmount, Ga., said Police Chief Chandler Cagle Walter and officer Olan Mark Lowe resigned from the Police Department after they were arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigat­ion in an inquiry over falsified records.

■ John Thompson, 31, of Coker, Ala., was charged in a warrant with capital murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 19-month-old daughter, who was hospitaliz­ed after officers responding to a medical call found the girl breathing irregularl­y, authoritie­s said.

■ Jeffrey Bonner, the president and chief executive officer of the St. Louis Zoo, said everyone at the zoo is “just devastated right now” after the death of Avi, an Asian elephant calf euthanized because he had developmen­tal problems that limited his ability to feed.

■ Jacob Miskill, a police officer in Anne Arundel County, Md., was charged with misconduct in office, theft and three counts of burglary and was suspended without pay after investigat­ors said he stole more than $1,500 worth of guns and other property from a residence.

■ Howell Camp, 58, a Navy veteran, pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed firearm and possession of firearms on federal property after officials said he approached a Veterans Affairs clinic in Pensacola, Fla., armed with an AR-15 rifle and a 9mm handgun.

■ Autron Hayes, the city manager of Sylvester, Ga., said Police Chief Shawn Urquhart, who has been isolated in his home since he tested positive for covid-19 in mid-July, plans to return to work after a recent follow-up test came back negative.

■ Warren Broussard, pastor of Immaculate Conception Church and Parish in Albuquerqu­e, N.M., will be the last Jesuit priest to leave the state after leaders of the Society of Jesus Catholic order decided to leave New Mexico, citing a shortage of priests.

■ Keith Wildhaber, a gay St. Louis County, Mo., police lieutenant who settled a discrimina­tion lawsuit against the Police Department for $10.25 million, announced that he is resigning from his job as commander of the department’s new diversity and inclusion unit.
