■ An estimated 510,000 Arkansans will go to the polls Tuesday to make their choices among a veritable smorgasbord of Democratic and Republican candidates seeking their party nominations for public office. The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The 510,000-voter estimate is that of state Auditor Jimmie (Red) Jones, who concedes that arriving at such a figure in advance is about as reliable as “predicting when the world will come to an end.”

CAMDEN — Officials have blamed a paperwork glitch for the transfer of a capital murder suspect to a Benton pre-release center, where the man mowed lawns and performed yardwork until discovered last week. Grant County authorities discovered the mistake Aug. 16 when they tried to locate Jessie Earl Hill, 19, of Camden to complete a court-ordered mental examination. Hill is charged with capital murder in Grant and Ouachita counties in the January slayings of two Camden men — Billy Ray Lee, 42, and Arbrady Moss, 39. Ouachita County authorities have said their charge likely will be reduced to first degree murder before it comes to trial.

■ North Little Rock is ready to pull the trigger on a five piece swap of downtown properties with developer John Gaudin that is supposed to result in a public parking deck and a $30 million hotel. By giving up four vacant, cityowned parcels, North Little Rock would gain the empty Rye Furniture Building at Maple Street and Broadway owned by Gaudin. In appraised value, the exchange would be for $2.2 million each. The City Council is to vote on the land swap at its meeting tonight.
