Mix of seniors, underclassmen provides lift to Mount Vernon-Enola

- BY SAM PIERCE Staff Writer

The Mount Vernon-Enola girls basketball team has a great mix of senior leadership and underclassmen, head coach Adam Carlton said.

“We have several players with experience — Brooke Adcock, Kenlie Raby and Kassidy McJunkins — who all started and played big roles in our teams,” Carlton said. “Abby Benton is the other senior who brings a defensive presence to our team.”

The coach said McJunkins has worked hard this summer — improving so much as a playmaker.

“She led our team last year in assists while making the allstate tournament team,” Carlton said. “She took on more of a scoring role last year, and that has continued this year as well.

“Brooke is our energy person. She plays extremely hard on defense and is our leading shooter.”

Carlton said Raby brings a physical presence to the team. He said she is a great inside and outside player and was named all-conference last year. He said all three of them bring great leadership to Mount Vernon-Enola.

Carlton said Piper Peterson has also worked tremendously hard over the summer. He said there are also three underclassmen coming off the bench, including Morgan Brewer, who played several minutes off the bench last season.

“Add to that Riley Kelley, who is a hardworking sophomore that moved up at the end of last year,” Carlton said. “We also have a ninth-grader, Marlee Raby, who has moved up to the senior high team this year.”

Mount Vernon-Enola finished 30-8 a season ago, and Carlton said the goal for this year is to win the conference championship and make it to the state tournament.

The coach said the games against Wonderview, Sacred Heart, Nemo Vista, Quitman and Greers Ferry West Side are the games to watch. Three of those are conference opponents, and he said West Side and Quitman are very tough nonconference teams.
