Arkansas achievers
■ Monica Tedford, a U.S. Navy veteran and an accounting major at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, has been named the newest recipient of the AT&T War Memorial Scholarship. A substitute teacher and mother of two, Tedford carries a 4.0 grade point average in accounting. AT&T established the scholarship at the Arkansas Community Foundation in 2011 to support Arkansas veterans seeking higher educations. The $2,500 scholarship honors Arkansas’ 25 Medal of Honor recipients and has been awarded annually to a high-achieving veteran who attends an accredited two- or four-year college or university in Arkansas. Tedford said, “I am a junior majoring in Business Administrative Accounting, and I hope to one day become a CPA with my twin, who is already a CPA. At some point, we would like to start our own firm. This scholarship has opened a door and the prospect of a brighter future. It is your generosity that makes it possible for me to concentrate on my education and not worry about the funds. I hope one day I will be in same position to help a student out the same way this scholarship has helped me.”
■ The civil engineering program at Arkansas State University announced that three students have received academic scholarships from the Arkansas section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Mason Keeling of Clinton and Zach Maddox of Lepanto received scholarship awards of $3,500 each.
John (Justus) Sawyer IV of Jonesboro received a $5,000 scholarship. The Arkansas section of the American Society of Civil Engineers is a strong supporter of student civil engineering competitions and the ASU civil engineering program, according to Jason Stewart, director of the program, which is based in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Section representative Aaron Robinson of Bond Consulting Engineers Inc. in Jacksonville presented the scholarships to the students during a campus visit. Keeling, a senior, plans to complete his civil engineering degree in May. His parents are David and April Keeling. Maddox, a junior, expects to graduate in May 2022. His plans include structural engineering in the transportation field. His parents are William and Melinda Maddox. Sawyer, a senior, also plans to graduate in May 2021. His parents are John and Dia Sawyer.
■ Sara Jones, Ph.D., APRN, and Leanne Lefler, Ph.D., APRN, both associate professors in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Nursing, have been inducted as Fellows in the American Academy of Nursing.
