■ Patrolman Walker was attacked by a gang of five or six soldiers at Second and Main streets about 9 o’clock last night, knocked down and severely beaten with his own club. He was taken to the City Hospital to have his wounds dressed. It was said that his condition was not serious. Patrolman Walker had arrested a soldier who had a bottle of liquor in his pocket. The soldier, with several comrades, was waiting at the Main street corner for a motor bus to take them back to camp. All obviously had been drinking and Walker tried to arrest the man who evidently was furnishing the source of supply.

HOT SPRINGS — A Hot Springs city director who is opposed to having casinos in this resort town — as outlined in a proposed constitutional amendment — plans to call his fellow board members’ hands Monday. City Director Charles Oxford has drafted a resolution “expressing opposition to casino gambling in Hot Springs and to a statewide lottery.” The resolution appears on the agenda for Monday’s Board of Directors meeting despite Mayor Helen Selig’s request to Oxford, whom she visited earlier this week, that he hold off on it. “The amendment isn’t even on the ballot,” Selig said Wednesday. “And there is a belief that the city board should not vote on the issue before the voters vote on it.”

■ Questions from the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Division prompted Little Rock to drop private clubs from an ordinance city directors will consider tonight that would have restricted private clubs and event centers from locating within 1,000 feet of a home, school, church or “sexually oriented business.” City Manager Bruce Moore said sections dealing with private clubs were removed until he can meet with Michael Langley, the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Division director, later this week.
