Circuit judge put up for commission

Earnest Brown Jr., circuit judge for the 6th Division of the 11th Judicial District West, has been nominated to the Arkansas Judicial Discipline and Disability Commission.

The commission recommends to the state Supreme Court whether to suspend, remove or involuntar­ily retire or censure judges. It investigat­es and may take disciplina­ry action or, in the most serious cases, recommend to the Supreme Court discipline for a judge whose actions are found to violate the Code of Judicial Conduct.

Brown has just started his third six-year term as 6th Division judge. He is a former state representa­tive for District 16 and was assistant speaker pro tem for District 4.

Brown was a member of the Judiciary Committee, State Agencies and Government­al Affairs committee; co-chairman of the Legislativ­e Joint Auditing State Agencies subcommitt­ee; alternate on the Joint Public Retirement and Social Security Programs committee and secretary for the Arkansas Legislativ­e Black Caucus. He was deputy prosecutin­g attorney for 11th Judicial District West prosecutin­g attorney’s office and managing partner with Brown and McKissic Law Firm.

A former adjunct professor in criminal justice department at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Brown is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and president of Delta Sigma Lambda Chapter.

He is a member of the Specialty Court, Nominating, Legislativ­e, Juvenile and Education committees of Judicial Council. He chairs the Articles and Bylaws Committee and Judicial Resources Assessment Committee.

Brown is a new member of the commission along with 14th Judicial District Circuit Judge Andrew Bailey. They replace Kirk Johnson and David Guthrie.
