■ The state Highway Commission agreed tentatively last month to swap Pope County a 14-mile section of Highway 27 for a 17-mile section of Fort Mountain Road. Now, some residents of Searcy and Newton Counties, which border Pope County on the North, are objecting. The Highway 27 section is from a point north of Hector at the junction of Fort Mountain Road north to Highway 16. The Fork Mountain Road section is from Highway 16 southwest to Highway
27. Both are mountainous, gravel roadways.

■ When discussing Whitewater allegations in 1994, Gov. Jim Guy Tucker compared himself to the movie character Forrest Gump.
As moviegoers might recall, the lead character was superimposed in historical scenes with Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and other world leaders. Like Gump, Tucker said, he had been placed in shady Whitewater business deals when he really wasn’t there. As the seventh week of testimony ended Friday, Tucker’s presence in business dealings with James McDougal’s Madison Guaranty Savings and Loan Association and David Hale’s Capital Management Services have proved to be anything but fictional. Prosecution witnesses have placed Tucker in business dealings alleged to be part of a conspiracy with James McDougal and his ex-wife, Susan McDougal.

■ The Little Rock School District is being recommended for accreditation by the international AdvancED accrediting organization after a three-day study this week of the district, its schools and leadership by a team of educators from both in and outside of the state. This is the first time the district has sought systemwide accreditation, although individual schools in the district have long been accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. Dave Stipe, a 40-year educator from Topsail Beach, N.C., led the team that visited Little Rock.
