HOT SPRINGS — Dr. Gopakumar Maruthur,

77, of Hot Springs, Ark., passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2021. He was born March 13, 1944 in Calicut, Kerala, India to the late Vasudevan Nair and Devi Maruthur.

After practicing as a physician in India from 1968 to 1971, Dr. Maruthur arrived in the United States in 1971. He completed his training in internal medicine and endocrinol­ogy in Chicago, Ill., and establishe­d his practice in Hot Springs in 1976. Dr. Maruthur proudly served his patients with great compassion and care until his retirement in 1998.

As a physician, he was known for his ability to make difficult diagnoses and treat complex conditions. During his retirement, Dr. Maruthur began painting and sketching and become prolific in these arts; he was also involved in the arts community in Hot Springs. He also pursued yoga practice and became a master gardener. He was a fixture in the downtown community and was known for his daily walks down Bathhouse Row. He was devoted to the Park Avenue Community Associatio­n (PACA) and recently provided seed funding for lights for the “Light Uptown” project in Hot Springs. Dr. Maruthur was also into the beauty of nature, wildlife, and the preservati­on of its beauty. He created a private reserve north of Hot Springs dedicated to the wildlife.

He is pre-deceased by his sister, Premila Nair; and his brothers, Indranath Maruthur and Naveen Maruthur.

He is survived by his children, Dr. Mario Maruthur and Dr. Nisa Maruthur; sister-in-law, Jyothi Chandran; and nieces, Sitara Girme, Anjana Rajsekhar, Anita Divakaran, and Ajita Haridas.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
